The Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association (PRSM), the authority on retail, multi-site facilities management, released a white paper that offers strategies and insights on sourcing options for retail facilities. The white paper, titled "Understanding Retail Facilities Sourcing," is intended to identify and define the different types of sourcing options to help retailers understand the issue and to better prepare them to participate in this conversation within their respective organizations. The paper also provides guidance on what a well-prepared facilities department should look like and how best to tackle the situation if a retailer's department needs to make changes. More

A telephone survey conducted among 1,000 U.S. adults by Ipsos Public Affairs commissioned by found that, given the state of the economy, almost half of consumers have been looking for deals throughout the year when shopping for those on their holiday gift list, while only 18 percent are planning to wait to shop on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Talk about a fashion makeover. Financially struggling Liz Claiborne Inc. said that it is selling its namesake brand and several others to concentrate on its Juicy Couture, Lucky Brand and kate spade fashion plates, which appeal to well-heeled shoppers. The company, which hasn't had an annual profit since 2006, said it will change its name to reflect that emphasis. More

Uniqlo Co., a Japanese-based operator of casual apparel stores, is opening two supersized flagship stores in Manhattan, N.Y., in addition to four smaller pop-up locations throughout the borough. The permanent stores will include a 64,000-square-foot unit at Herald Square and an 89,000-square-foot mega store on Fifth Avenue and 53rd Street. The openings are a sign that in spite of worries about U.S. consumer confidence, foreign retailers continue to view the country as offering attractive expansion opportunities on a long-term basis. Vacancies at U.S. shopping malls climbed to the highest in at least a decade as feeble employment growth restrained consumer spending, Reis Inc. said. Regional and super-regional mall vacancies rose to 9.4 percent in the three months ended Sept. 30 from 8.8 percent a year earlier and 9.3 percent in the second quarter, according to the New York-based property-research company. It was the highest since Reis began publishing the data in 2000. More

Darden Restaurants Inc. an agreement to buy Eddie V's Restaurants Inc.'s brands and all related assets for $59 million in cash. Darden, which plans to complete the deal by the end of this year, will roll the restaurant concepts — including Eddie V's Prime Seafood and Wildfish Seafood Grille restaurants — into its specialty restaurant group, said a news release. The group includes The Capital Grille, Bahama Breeze and Seasons 52. More

Walgreen Co. recently unveiled its first electric vehicle charging station in Orlando, Fla. The Deerfield, Ill.-based drugstore giant, which expects to add another eight stations by the end of October, has partnered with Car Charging Group, which owns and builds EV charging stations. The Walgreen stations have two chargers and are compatible with every electric vehicle made in North America. More
