NRF: US shoppers plan to increase holiday spending by 1 percent

Americans will increase holiday-season spending by 1 percent this year as they shop less at discounters and focus more on quality and service, a trade group said. U.S. consumers plan to spend an average $688.87 on holiday-related shopping, more than last year's estimated $681.83, according to a survey conducted for the National Retail Federation by BIGresearch. More

Collective Brands announced that its Payless ShoeSource unit has signed two new franchise deals to bring the Payless retail chain to new international markets beginning next year, including opening Payless stores in Mexico, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Payless ShoeSource has signed a multi-year franchise deal with Grupo Axo, a new strategic partner headquartered in Mexico City, to bring the Payless retail chain to Mexico beginning late next year. The two companies said they expect to open 41 stores in the next three years and that they believe the Mexican market can support more than 300 stores in the long term. More

Tractor Supply Q3 profit rises; Lifts fiscal year 2010 outlook

Retail farm and ranch store chain Tractor Supply Company , reported its profit for the third quarter increased from a year ago as sales grew 10.9 percent. Looking ahead, the company raised its fiscal year earnings and sales forecast. Tractor's net income for the third quarter was $32.0 million or $0.43 per share, compared to $22.0 million or $0.30 per share in the prior year's third quarter. More

Darden expands to Middle East with franchise deal

Darden's Restaurants Inc. is working with Americana Group to develop and run its Red Lobster, Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse brands in the Middle East. Terms were not disclosed. "The Middle East is an attractive, growing market that has shown a strong affinity for American brands, especially American dining brands," Darden Chairman and CEO Clarence Otis said in a statement. IKEA plans to install solar power systems totaling 4.5 megawatts of generating capacity at seven stores and a distribution center in California, bringing arrays to 90 percent of the chain's portfolio in the Golden State. IKEA disclosed its plans to expand the company's solar initiative. If the projects gain the appropriate permits, they can begin later this fall and be completed early next year, according to the company. More

Nearly two-thirds of retailers (63.8 percent) expect their company's online sales to grow by 15 percent or more compared to last holiday season, up from less than half of retailers (45.8 percent) who had those expectations last year.
