Consumers, businesses pump up third quarter growth

The economy grew at its fastest pace in a year in the third quarter as consumers and businesses stepped up spending, creating momentum that could carry into the final three months of the year. Though part of the increase in output came from the reversal of temporary factors that had restrained growth, the expansion was a welcome relief for an economy that looked on the brink of recession just weeks ago. Additionally, consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, grew at a 2.4 percent rate after slowing to a 0.7 percent pace in the second quarter. More

Sobered by store closings and the rise of online shopping, owners of U.S. shopping centers are filling space and drawing visitors by turning to unusual tenants like gun ranges and go-cart tracks. Mall giant Simon Property Group Inc. opened an aquarium in July at its Grapevine Mills mall near Dallas. Real-estate brokerage Jones Lang LaSalle Inc. put a fencing academy in a former Old Navy store in Florida's Tallahassee Mall, and a community theater on the lower level of a former Boscov's store in Harrisburg, Pa. Tiffany & Co. to open a store in Prague

Tiffany & Co. today announced plans to open a store in Prague, marking the luxury retailer's first location in Eastern Europe. The store is scheduled to open in the summer of 2012. The approximately 2,600-square-feet of retail space is designed with elements of Tiffany's famous flagship store in New York, including custom furnishings and showcases that incorporate the company's delicate wheatleaf, floral and dragonfly patterns, as well as elegant fluting and the distinctive Tiffany Blue. More

Office Depot's Boca Raton, Fla., headquarters has been awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star certification, signifying the building performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency. Energy Star buildings use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings, and also release 35 percent less carbon, a news release from Office Depot said. More

7-Eleven Inc., the largest convenience store operator in the world, is planning on taking a "Big Gulp" of the Ontario, Canada, marketplace. The company is set to announce at the International Council of Shopping Centers conference that from 2012 to 2016 it will open up to 200 new corporate stores in Ontario, with a major focus on the Greater Toronto Area. Shopping center sold in Central Texas

In a sign that the Central Texas retail market might be turning around, the 1890 Ranch shopping center in Cedar Park has been sold for $97.6 million. The buyer is a joint venture between Chicago-based Inland Western Retail Real Estate Trust and Canada-based RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust. The seller was Austin, Texas-based Endeavor Real Estate Group, which developed the 486,896-square-foot center at the 183-A toll road and RM 1431. It opened in 2007 and includes a SuperTarget, PetSmart, Academy Sports, Ross Dress for Less and a Cinemark theater. More

The U.S. clothing giant Gap opened its first store in Poland amid a push to establish a foothold in central and eastern Europe even as the region faces an economic slowdown. Some 200 shoppers waited for the opening at the Polish capital's Arkadia mall and applauded when the doors opened. They then filed in to check out denim trousers, shirts, blouses and T-shirts. Some said the prices were only slightly higher than at other stores selling similar casual wear and are justified by the quality. More
