Global consumer confidence bounces back

Consumer confidence is heading in the right direction, according to the latest Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence Index. Worldwide the index rose to 86 points, a nine-point spike from six months ago. The U.S. registered a four-point increase to 84 points in the third quarter compared to the first half of the year -- the country's first gain since early 2007. MORE



Kohl's says online sales to grow at least 30 percent in 2009

Kohl's Corp., the fourth- largest U.S. department-store chain, expects Internet sales to climb at least 30 percent this year as it boosts advertising through sites. The chain's Internet sales trail Macy's Inc., the second- largest U.S. department-store chain, and J.C. Penney Co., the third-biggest, the CEO said. Toys R Us to open in-store FAO Schwarz boutiques

Ahead of the holidays, Toys R Us is opening FAO Schwarz boutiques in some of its stores and relaunching the iconic toy store's Web site. The announcement gives the first clear indication of Toys R Us' plan for the brand best known for the scene in the 1988 movie "Big" in which Tom Hanks danced on a floor piano. The largest U.S. toy-store chain bought the brand in May. More
Walgreens to acquire 12 Eaton Apothecary pharmacies

Walgreen Co. plans to buy 12 Eaton Apothecary pharmacies in the Boston area from D.A.W. Inc., a subsidiary of Nyer Medical Group. Walgreens, which announced the deal, said the transaction is valued at about $19 million. The acquisition is expected to close in the next 90 days. More

Center in Casper, Wyo., Design firm Gruskin Group developed Verizon Wireless'latest store design and adapted the prototype to existing retail tenant space at the Casper store location to create a model for green commercial interiors. Gruskin Group worked with Verizon Wireless's internal corporate design team, as well as Paladino and Co., the team's sustainability consultant, to design the 3,479-sq.-ft. Casper store with the goal of achieving a LEED Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. More

JC Penney sees New York City as proving ground for more metro stores

J.C. Penney Corp. is looking at its new Manhattan, N.Y., store as a model for expanding into other metro areas as suburban malls no longer serve as foundations for growth and the retailer feels it has captured an edgier merchandise mix that can make it a winner with urban customers. Chief Executive Mike Ullman discussed the approach with analysts and also said J.C. Penney is feeling "a bit more upbeat" about the holiday season, with signs of customer traffic stabilizing. The retailer itself may do well enough to exceed its expectation for generating $300 million of free cash flow in the current fiscal year, Ullman said. More

Meijer announced a new pricing program designed around more everyday price reductions, deeper discounts and a simpler method of communicating prices to shoppers. The streamlined system has three different sales categories: Everyday Best Price; Sale and Price Drop, the retailer said. Everyday Best Price, a new designation at Meijer, applies to products that have been reduced in price and guarantee the retailer's lowest price on the item. More
Amendment could let struggling retailers claim billions in tax refunds

In a move that could potentially bring billions of dollars to cash-strapped retailers and other industries, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus are crafting an amendment that would add an expanded operating loss "carryback" provision to unemployment insurance legislation. The amendment is expected to give both large and small businesses the ability to "carry back" net losses suffered in the current recession in order to claim a refund from taxes paid in previous years when they made a profit.
