A storm-battered supply chain threatens holiday shopping
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The economic effects of Hurricane Sandy are reverberating beyond areas hit by the storm as businesses warn customers of delays, try to get merchandise out of closed ports and face canceled orders. In addition to shutting down shipping terminals and submerging warehouses, the storm also tangled up deliveries because of downed power lines, closed roads and scarce gasoline in parts of New York and New Jersey. The importance of facility air balance
Engineered Systems Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Achieving air balance in a facility is imperative to air quality, safety, and energy efficiency. However, many times plant operators focus only on exhausting air to get rid of unwanted elements — such as heat, smoke, moisture, contaminants, or carbon dioxide — without adequate attention to properly replacing the air being exhausted. What does a facility manager manage?
Buildings    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The question is paradoxical in nature, because although the answer is simple and finite in one regard – i.e., "the facility" – it is actually vast and seemingly endless. As budgets continue to tighten, and with increasing regulations dictating decisions, it is helpful to analyze the wide-reaching responsibilities of facilities management teams. More

Mini-retail becoming big bigger biggest thing?
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
This holiday season, GameStop is launching 80 Holiday Pop-Up stores. These mini-retail sites are crammed with the toys kids love: Lego, Angry Birds, Hello Kitty, and more. What this signals is not the ubiquity of Pop-Up retail, but the fact that small retail has become very big. There's a new trend toward keeping it small: keeping inventory low, service marks high, and a careful watch on the consumer. More

How virtual storage systems turn buildings into batteries
GreenBiz    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Terry Boston, PJM President and CEO, once remarked, "Energy storage technology is the silver bullet that helps resolve the variability in power demand." When most people conceive of energy storage, images of massive battery banks, reservoirs for hydrologic pump storage, or compressed-air systems come to mind. Yet these capital-intensive "hard storage" approaches are expensive and fall well short our energy storage needs. If energy storage represents the "silver bullet" to variability in power demand, as Boston contends, we must embrace more nimble, lower-cost solutions. More
