International fashion retailers take Canada by storm
The Fashion Spot
It's official: International retailers have set their sights on Canada as a new place to grow their businesses. In the last five years, U.S. big box retailers like Marshalls, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Target — brands for which Canadians would normally plan cross-border vacation shopping trips — have opened, some to huge success and others to sluggish sales. Urban shopping centers are making the largest investment, with fashion brands choosing to open in mega-malls in Calgary and Toronto.

Bob Craves, Costco manager who sent poor to college, dies at 72
Bloomberg
Bob Craves, a co-founding officer of Costco Wholesale Corp. in 1983 who later helped send thousands of young people in the U.S. to college, has died. He was 72. Craves died of cancer on Nov. 5, according to the College Success Foundation, the Issaquah, Washington-based group that he established in 2000. He retired last year.

The past financial woes of Alan Kahn, developer of Village at Sandhill in South Carolina, are buried under a makeshift winter wonderland as the outdoor shopping mall heads into the holiday season. Kahn is quick to point out the shoppers sipping hot cocoa from horse-drawn carriages and the carols chiming from a children's choir perched on a stage in the center of the sprawling 1.15 million-square-foot center, which he says has been bolstered over the past year with a handful of shops and restaurants that exceeded his expectations.

Investors, tenants prefer green retail properties as regulations loom

Green retail properties are more desirable to both investors and tenants than non-green properties. That's the message from Nils Kok, Ph.D., executive director of the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark and associate professor of finance at Maastricht University. Kok will be the keynote speaker at ICSC's RetailGreen Conference in Phoenix on Dec. 2-3, where he will provide an investment perspective on sustainability in retail real estate.

Price Chopper to modernize 135 stores, change name

Price Chopper announced a plan to modernize stores, which includes a redesign of all its locations and a rebranding to the name Market 32.
