Mall landlords come to aid of supertyphoon victims

Mall landlords are coming to the aid of survivors of Typhoon Haiyan (also being called Typhoon Yolanda), which devastated large sections of the Philippines this past weekend. SM, the Philippines’ largest developer, has established a P100 million (about $2.3 million) fund to provide food and supplies, and to aid reconstruction. Philippine President Benigno Aquino estimates that the death toll could reach 2,500, while others predict it will be higher; Haiyan has been described as the strongest storm in recorded history.

Ikea becomes largest retail wind energy investor in Canada

Ikea Canada announced it has purchased a 46 megawatt wind farm in Pincher Creek, Alberta. The 20-turbine wind farm will be the largest owned by a Canadian retailer and is expected to generate 161 gigawatt hours (GWh) each year, which is more than double the total energy consumption of Ikea Canada. The project is currently being constructed by global wind and solar company Mainstream Renewable Power and is expected to be fully operational in fall 2014.

rue21 opens 1,000th store

Newly private rue21 Inc. said it had opened its 1,000th store — a shop in Enid, Okla. Warrendale, Pa.-based rue21 was taken private earlier this year after being publicly traded on Nasdaq since 2009. It's also been on a growth spurt with a pace of about 100 store openings a year since then and has plans for 1,700 stores in the U.S.

More anxious retailers will open earlier on Thanksgiving

The annual retail arms race is invading Thanksgiving with a vengeance. Instead of a Norman Rockwell tableau of family gathered round the turkey, a more fitting image this year might be Americans rushing out to bag bargains. Walmart, Target and Toys R Us have all said they would be open longer on Thanksgiving and trot out deals usually reserved for Black Friday, the traditional launch of Christmas-centric consumerism. Others, such as Macy's and Best Buy, had waited until midnight but this year will welcome shoppers much earlier.
