Black Friday sales expected to draw bigger crowds

Despite backlash against early Thanksgiving Day store openings, Black Friday bargains are still expected to attract hordes of shoppers this year. An estimated 152 million people are expected to shop over Black Friday weekend, up 10 percent from last year, according to a report from the National Retail Federation. The annual estimate of Black Friday shoppers, which is based on a survey of 8,502 consumers, usually falls short of the actual number of shoppers on Black Friday. Last year, NRF estimated there would be 138 million people at the stores, when 212 million actually showed up. More

Retail sales rose 0.5 percent in October, suggesting a solid start to the quarter

Americans spent more on autos, electronics and building supplies in October, pushing up retail sales for a fifth consecutive month, the Commerce Department said. The report suggests the economy maintained solid growth at the start of the fourth quarter. Retail sales increased 0.5 percent from the previous month, the agency said. Strong auto sales helped, but even without them, sales rose 0.6 percent, and when excluding autos and sales at gasoline stations, sales rose 0.7 percent. More

Canadians will be more cautious holiday shoppers than their U.S. counterparts this season, while sales at some U.S. retail stores operating in this country are weaker than the stateside division. Average retail sales in the U.S. are projected to grow 5 percent in November and December, Sal Guatieri, vice-president and senior economist at BMO Capital markets, said in the firm's annual holiday sales outlook.
