The Associated Press via ABC News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's estimated that U.S. shoppers hit stores and websites at record numbers over the Thanksgiving weekend, according to a survey released by the National Retail Federation. They were attracted by retailers' efforts to make shopping easier, including opening stores on Thanksgiving evening, updating mobile shopping applications for smartphones and tablets, and expanding shipping and layaway options. All told, a record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over the four-day weekend starting on Thanksgiving, up 9.2 percent of last year, according to a survey of 4,000 shoppers that was conducted by research firm BIGinsight for the trade group. The past and future of America's biggest retailers
NPR    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's an anniversary that most Americans can celebrate — the birthday of the big-box store. Discount shopping as we know it began 50 years ago. In 1962, enterprising retailers invented Wal-Mart, Target and Kmart. These stores changed the way we shop and the way we think about price. More

Store mannequins may be no dummies — they're spies
San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Store mannequins are meant to catch your eye. Soon you may catch theirs. Benetton and other fashion brands are increasingly deploying mannequins to watch over shoppers in their stores, deploying technology used to identify criminals at airports. Retailers are introducing the EyeSee, sold by Italian mannequin maker Almax, to glean data on customers much as online merchants are able to do. More

Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Two hundred shoppers were in line to snag a free C$10 ($10) gift card as Toronto's downtown Eaton Centre opened at 6 a.m. (1100 GMT) on Friday, and some said they had been waiting for two hours. While the early bird crowd would have been a disappointment at any major U.S. shopping center, it was new for Canada, which celebrates Thanksgiving in October and usually sees its best sales after Christmas. Fifth Avenue loses title as world's most expensive retail street
Retail Traffic    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For the first time in 11 years, New York's Fifth Avenue has been knocked off its spot as the most expensive retail street in the world by Hong Kong's Causeway Bay. Commercial real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield reports that rents for retail spaces on Causeway Bay rose 34.9 percent year-over-year, to $2,630 per sq. ft. In contrast, rents on Fifth Avenue rose only 11.1 percent, to $2,500 per sq. ft. That growth rate was below the average for the U.S. retail market overall, which posted a 16.3 percent year-over-year increase in rents. More

GreenBiz    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

For instance, we’d love to see them tackle the term "natural," given the amount of consumer confusion we see about that. More
