Black Friday weekend: Record $52.4 billion spent

Earlier than ever store openings and steep discounts helped retailers notch record sales this Black Friday weekend, according to early reports. Total spending over the four-day weekend following Thanksgiving reached a record $52.4 billion, up 16 percent from $45 billion last year, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation. A record 226 million consumers shopped in stores and online between Thursday and Sunday, up from 212 million last year. Individual shoppers spent more too, the NRF said. The average holiday shopper shelled out $398.62, up from $365.34 in 2010. More

Best Buy leads retail pack to start the season

Having the right products at the right price at the right time helped make Best Buy one of the early winners in what was a record start for U.S. retailers to the holiday shopping season. Apparel brand Gap Inc. said that it aims to triple its store network in China next year, one of the latest foreign brands to target the country's consumer spending growth. Redmond Yeung, president of China for Gap, which competes with Uniqlo parent Fast Retailing Co. and Esprit Holdings Ltd. in China, said the company aimed to operate 15 stores in the country by the end of the fiscal year to January, and to triple that number to 45 in fiscal 2012. Brown Shoe Co. said that while profit rose dramatically in the third quarter thanks to a business unit divestiture, the retailer will cut several of its lines and close underperforming stores nationwide to shore up profitability. The parent of Famous Footwear said it will close between 70 and 75 Famous Footwear stores in fiscal 2011 and 2012, for a total of about 145 store closures. More

Retailers push Federal Reserve for yet lower debit fees

Retailers won a big victory last summer when the Federal Reserve halved the fees that banks and credit card companies were charging them to process debit card transactions. For some retailers, however, that was not enough. Trade groups representing retailers, convenience stores and grocers filed a lawsuit against the Fed, asserting that the board's debit fee rules still allowed banks to capture too much money from debit card purchases.
