JCPenney sales surge in November

Shares of JCPenney are nearly 4 percent higher in after-hours trading following the release of favorable November same-store sales numbers, which showed a 10.1 percent increase from last year. Despite a 4.8 percent drop in same-store sales in Q3, the company said in its quarterly earnings release on Nov. 20 that it believed same-store sales trends would improve in Q4. In October, same-store sales were up 0.9 percent.

Haggar buys Canadian women's apparel company
The Dallas Morning News
Dallas-based Haggar Clothing Co. plans to expand its women's apparel business in the U.S. with an acquisition it announced. Haggar bought Tribal Sportswear, a women's apparel company based in Montreal that sells to 2,000 specialty stores and boutiques in Canada, the U.S. and England.

Dollar General accelerates expansion, again

A record 700 new Dollar General stores are slated to open in 2014, the company announced after reporting third-quarter results and tempering its full-year sales forecast. Same-stores sales at Dollar General increased 4.4 percent and total sales increased 10.5 percent to $4.38 billion during the third quarter ended Nov. 1.

US consumer spending gains more over Thanksgiving
Gallup
U.S. consumers' self-reported spending in stores, restaurants, gas stations, and online was $100 per day during Thanksgiving week, significantly higher than the average for the entire month of November. The incremental increase in spending last week compared with the November average is slightly higher than what Gallup has observed over the previous five Thanksgivings.

Amazon.com has set up camp on enemy turf to sell Kindle tablets and e-readers. The Seattle retailer has a pop-up shop within a San Francisco mall where it is selling the devices as well as branded covers and power adapters from vending machines. Building automation market set to grow 60 percent by 2021

The report, by Navigant Research, examines commercial building automation systems and sees global revenue in the field rising from $58.1 billion in 2013 to $100.8 billion by 2021.

The View from Europe: Heat recovery

The subject of doors on chiller cabinets has been vexing supermarket refrigeration managers in Europe, because the way to undoubted energy savings was being blocked by concerns over the effect on merchandising. But if doors on fridges is a well-understood set of technologies remaining unexploited for nonengineering reasons, then the flip side of the coin is the whole realm of heat recovery. Here the technologies — as far as supermarkets are concerned — are relatively little understood and underexploited, but the solution at least appears to be on the radar of the engineering departments.
