Despite flagging confidence and a weak employment picture, the holiday season is off to a good start with excellent retail activity in November and the prospect of a strong December. After several years of reining in spending, consumers are in the mood to splurge this holiday season. November activity was up substantially over last year. The Retail Index for December was 13.9, up from 12.4 a year ago. Planned spending for December is also strong at 12.7, compared to 11.8 last year. More

Department store chain J.C. Penney Co. is looking to homemaking doyenne Martha Stewart as it takes one big step toward re-imagining itself under its new CEO, a former Apple Inc. executive. Teen retailer Pacific Sunwear of California Inc., hoping for a financial turnaround after a three-year slump, said it plans to close as many as 200 of its weaker-performing stores around the country. The Anaheim, Calif.-based company known for its surf- and skate-inspired apparel also said it had secured $160 million in financing for its overhaul, even as it reported its 13th straight quarterly loss, of $17.6 million. That compares with a $6.96-million loss in the same period a year earlier. More

So far, most signs point to a very merry holiday season for retailers and shoppers alike. Early numbers from the National Retail Federation show that shoppers spent almost $400 apiece on Black Friday weekend, up from $365 last year. Surveys also indicate that the spending will continue through December; the NRF expects overall holiday sales to increase 2.8 percent over last year. More

IKEA, the world's leading home furnishings retailer, announced plans to install solar energy panels on 10 additional United States locations — its entire presence in the Southern U.S. Pending governmental permits, installation can begin this winter, with completion expected in Summer 2012. Collectively, the nine stores and one distribution center will total 10.7 megawatts of solar generating capacity, nearly 45,360 panels, and a projected annual electricity output of 15,248,334 kilowatt hours. President Barack Obama announced nearly $4 billion in combined federal and private-sector energy upgrades to buildings over the next two years. These investments will save billions in energy costs, promote energy independence, and, according to independent estimates, create tens of thousands of jobs in the hard-hit construction sector. The Los Angeles clothing maker committed to opening a 24,000-square-foot space next year in a multistory mall in Wangfujing, the Chinese capital's central shopping district. The opening of IKEA's new Ottawa location is a sign that the Swedish furniture seller is raising its defences and preparing for a looming retail "battle royale," according to industry experts.
