NRF: Holiday sales may rise faster than anticipated

The National Retail Federation raised its holiday sales forecast, saying stock market gains and higher income have lifted consumer confidence and given shoppers the ability to spend more this year. The U.S. industry group is now expecting retail sales in November and December, excluding cars, gasoline and meals at restaurants and online sales, to be up 3.3 percent, compared with its previous forecast of an increase of 2.3 percent."The start to the holiday season has surpassed all expectations," NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. A U.S.-based sister chain to Winners will open its first Canadian stores next year, including one in the now defunct nightclub Circa in Toronto’s entertainment district, the property owner has confirmed. The Circa site is one of at least four scheduled to open next year as Marshalls makes its move into Canada, the chief executive of RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust said. More

Zale Corp. is exploring the sale of its Piercing Pagoda kiosk business to focus on its fine jewelry operations, according to three people familiar with the matter. Buyout firms including Apollo Global Management LLC are looking at the division, according to the people, who declined to be identified because deliberations are private. The unit, whose sales topped $226 million in the year ended July 31, is profitable, the people said. More

Macy's lighting retrofit will trim electricity bill by 73 percent

Macy's stores around the country are about to get a lighting makeover that will curb the company's energy consumption by a huge amount. Retrofitting over 117,000 43-watt halogen-based bulbs used for accent lighting in 86 department stores with 17-watt LED bulbs from Philips — custom designed for the stores, of course — will help Macy's trim their electricity use by a whopping 73 percent. Office Depot announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell its Office Depot Japan business to Kakuyasu. The transaction also includes an agreement for Kakuyasu to license Office Depot's trade names, obtain sourcing services and continue to support Office Depot's global customers in Japan. Kakuyasu is one of the fastest growing and leading multi-channel businesses in Japan with FY 2009 sales of $775 million. Office Depot Japan was established in 1996 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Office Depot Inc. More

Loehmann's strikes deal for quick bankruptcy exit

Retailer Loehmann's ARCABL.UL said it reached an agreement with unsecured creditors that will allow the company to exit bankruptcy by Feb. 18. Loehmann Capital Corp's current owner, Istithmar, a unit of Dubai World DBWLD.UL, and Whippoorwill Associates Inc will backstop a rights offering that will invest $25 million in the company when it exits Chapter 11. More

Furniture retail giant IKEA is set to install solar energy panels on two more of its buildings, with projects planned for two East Coast stores. The company plans to bring its total solar fleet to 13 arrays with new installations at its stores in Paramus, New Jersey, and Stoughton, Mass. The planned systems are set to be IKEA’s largest solar projects in the U.S. to date. More
