Apple closing 20 retail stores in order to expand them, accomodate more customers

From Feb. 12: Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a keynote speech at the Goldman Sachs investor conference that Apple was going to close 20 of its retail stores, in order to move them and make them large enough to serve the ongoing influx of Apple customers. Some of Apple's stores aren't big enough, Cook said, noting that its retail outlets now see 10 million people per week across its 400-plus locations.

Office Depot in $976 million deal to buy rival OfficeMax

From Feb. 20: Office Depot Inc. will acquire smaller rival OfficeMax Inc in a $976 million all-stock deal, the companies said, confirming an agreement inadvertently announced earlier in the day, before it was completed.

Nike concept store in China totally built with trash
Green Retail Decisions
From Aug. 29: Nike's newest concept store in Shanghai, China, has been built 100 percent with trash, including soda cans, water bottles and old DVDs and CDs. Designed and built by Miniwiz Sustainable Development Ltd., a Taiwanese firm, the building used 5,500 soda cans, 2,000 PET water bottles and 50,000 old CDs and DVDs, the firm claimed.

Walmart opens first 100 percent LED-lit store

From Oct. 17: Walmart opened its first 100 percent LED-lit store in South Euclid, Ohio, which the company said will serve as a model for future store constructions. The store is the first of its kind to use energy efficient LED lighting in all areas of the location –illuminating parking lots and building signage to the ceiling lights and all refrigerated cases in the grocery section.

Neiman Marcus is sold for $6 billion

From Sept. 9: The owners of the Neiman Marcus luxury retail chain agreed to sell it to a group led by Ares Management and a Canadian pension plan in a deal worth $6 billion. The owners, a group of private equity investors led by TPG and Warburg Pincus, had been searching for a buyer for Neiman ahead of a planned initial public offering later in the year.
