Target to spend $1 billion on remodeling stores in 2010

Target will focus on updating existing stores rather than opening new ones this year. The discounter will spend $1 billion renovating 340 stores while opening fewer than 10 new locations. The company said it plans to incorporate a variety of new merchandise initiatives in the remodeled stores, including expanded grocery offerings, enhanced layout, and an improved in-store experience in a variety of other merchandise areas including beauty, home, electronics and video games. More

Store closings could keep piling up throughout first half of 2010

So far the pace of announced closings has been noticeably slower than in 2009, when a glut of retailers announced mass closures, bankruptcies or liquidations soon after the holiday shopping season concluded. By this time last year, seven major retailers had filed for bankruptcy and about a dozen others announced mass closings. That's not how things have played out so far this year. More

Last year (2009) was tough slogging for merchants and shoppers alike, as the STORES Hot 100 Retailers report reflects. Nevertheless, some retailers managed to generate solid to strong results, particularly those with value propositions that appeal to consumer frugality. In addition, chains with novel or otherwise different concepts were able to attract those shoppers willing to spend. Kohl's unveils 100th rooftop solar installation in May's Landing, NJ

Kohl's Department Stores announced that the company reached a new milestone in its solar program by activating the solar panels at its 100th solar location in Mays Landing, N.J., earlier this month. Kohl's has solar installations in six other states, and also announced a plan to expand its solar program into Pennsylvania. Solar is an integral component of the company's energy management efforts and commitment to be carbon neutral by the end of 2010. More



Target donates $500,000 and more than 1 million meals to earthquake victims in Haiti

In response to the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti (Jan. 12, 2010) and devastated Port-au-Prince, Target announced that it will donate $500,000 to support Haitian families impacted by the disaster. The donation will be made to the American Red Cross, which is providing desperately needed supplies and disaster-management services to the area through its International Response Fund. More

Hollywood Video may close 1,000 stores

Hollywood Video chain owner Movie Gallery Inc. could close about 1,000 stores as it embarks on its second major restructuring in a little more than two years, people familiar with the matter said. The video-rental chain, based in Wilsonville, Ore., operates more than 2,700 locations across the U.S. It is struggling under some $600 million in debt and a continued decline in the store-based video-rental business. Tom Shaw, the head of Anchor Blue, a clothing chain for teenagers, looked with approval at the 2,500 square feet of empty space that his company still rents. Foot traffic is up more than 7 percent, the chain says, and sales have increased nearly 23 percent since the trial remodeling last year. Anchor Blue is among a growing number of retailers thinking small — chopping off big chunks of stores or moving to more efficient spaces. The change reflects two trends in the retail world: Chains looking for new ways to cut costs in the sour economy, and consumers demanding a less sprawling shopping experience as they spend with greater purpose. Foot Locker to close 117 stores, cut 120 jobs

Foot Locker said it was consolidating its management team, cutting jobs and closing 117 stores this quarter as the athletic shoe retailer reorganizes its business under its new chief executive officer. The company, which has suffered in the downturn, said that it was combining the management team that oversees its Lady Foot Locker business with the one that manages Foot Locker U.S., Kids Foot Locker and Footaction.
