US energy independence: Tracking America's energy bill
International Business Times
America's dependence on foreign oil has gone down every single year since 2007. In 2010, the U.S. imported less than 50 percent of the oil the country consumed — the first time that's happened in 13 years — and the trend continued in 2011. The country's energy bill is also starting to fall.

Will dollar stores rule the retail world?
TIME
Dollar General, the U.S.'s largest dollar-store chain, posted better-than-expected profits, helping boost the company's stock, which is up 15 percent year to date. And earlier this year, it announced plans to open its 11,000 store by the end of the 2013 — an impressive figure for a discount retailer. The only other companies to boast store counts that high are fast-food chains like McDonald's and Subway.

Walgreens becomes 1st retail chain to diagnose, treat chronic conditions
USA Today via Kaiser Health News
It's not just sore throats and flu shots anymore. Walgreens became the first retail store chain to expand its health care services to include diagnosing and treating patients for chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes and high cholesterol. The move is the retail industry's boldest push yet into an area long controlled by physicians, and comes amid continuing concerns about health care costs and a potential shortage of primary care doctors.
E-commerce redefines in-store retail
CNBC
What's old is new again for some e-commerce retailers. After bowing to the realization that customers often like to see items in person before buying, a growing number of online retail companies are setting up physical stores, while at the same time redefining what brick and mortar means for them.
The biggest fight over renewable energy is now in the states
The Washington Post
Nowadays, a huge chunk of the action on clean energy in the United States is happening at the state level. Some 29 states and Washington D.C. have renewable energy standards requiring electric utilities to get a portion of their power from sources like wind or solar. Those state-level standards have played a big role in doubling the amount of renewable-energy capacity in the United States in the past four years.

PayPal eyes in-store retail customers
The Financial Times
Between the various charts and bar graphs projected on the screen at eBay's analyst day was a cartoon of a woman in a shoe store.
Surrounded by dozens of pairs of pumps and dishevelled shoeboxes, a weary store clerk kneels before her, cradling her foot. "This pair is so perfect," she says. "I can't wait to buy them cheaper online somewhere. What's your Wi-Fi password?"
