Kohl's Department Stores achieved its 2010 goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions, according to the company's first annual Sustainability Report. Energy management and green power purchases allowed Kohl's to reach the goal, which was announced in December 2009. Kohl's ranks first in retail and second overall on the US EPA's quarterly rankings of top green power purchasers with more than 1.4 billion kWh purchased in wind, solar, biomass and small hydro - enough to account for 100 percent of Kohl's purchased electricity use. Gas and food eat most of the gain in April consumer spending

Consumers spent more in April, but much of the increase was eaten up by higher food and energy prices. After discounting for the jump in prices, spending barely budged and after-tax incomes were flat for a second straight month. Consumer spending rose 0.4 percent, reflecting a surge in the category that covers food and gasoline, areas which showed big price gains last month, the Commerce Department reported Friday. Excluding price changes, spending rose a much smaller 0.1 percent. More

Home Depot, Walmart pledge $1 million to Joplin relief efforts

Both Wal-mart and The Home Depot have each pledged $1 million to help with the relief efforts in Joplin, Mo., in the wake of the devastating tornado. The big box retailers had stores that were leveled in the monsterous storm. And both stores also had fatalities inside them.

Big Lots will pay about $1.8-million in cash for the Liquidation World stock, obtaining the chain's 92 stores in the process. It will also make good on the company's debts and "normaliz(e) the working capital needs" of Liquidation World — two tasks that it estimates will bring its total investment to $36-million. More

Charming Shoppes Inc., the operator of the plus-size Lane Bryant chain, is exploring a sale of its Fashion Bug stores, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. Moelis & Co. is advising the retailer on a possible deal, said the person, who declined to be named because the process isn’t public. A sale of the unit may be a few weeks away, the person said. Fashion Bug, aimed at women aged 30 to 50, makes up about a third of the chain’s more than $2 billion in sales. More
