Physical stores ramp up technology investments to compete with Internet titans
ICSC
Physical retailers such as Target and Walmart are investing in technology to better compete with increasingly powerful Internet-based titans such as Amazon, Google, eBay, Facebook and Apple for consumers' attention and dollars, panelists said at a recent session at RECon, in Las Vegas. Increasingly, stores are scaling back their space needs and stocking only core merchandise while better facilitating ordering and delivery of their broader selections online, said Michelle Crames, vice president of social commerce solutions for Los Angeles–based Revionics.

Shining the light on dark store management
By Kevin Smith
For some of you, the work begins after your stores are closed for good. Of course, we are speaking about dark store management. It is the proverbial thorn in the side, rising up to poke you when you least want to deal with it. For many, the issues often are not identifying what needs to get done or monitored but at what frequency and scope. Today, we are going to assume that the dark stores in question are vacant sites with no tenants or active customer activity. The work at these sites can typically be broken up into three components.

Commercial, retail buildings fastest adopters of remote monitoring services in intelligent buildings
Today's Facility Manager
Remote monitoring in intelligent buildings is a service offered by third-party companies that audit and report on the operational performance of a building. The services have two key selling points. First, auditors can make recommendations to save energy costs by determining, for instance, a more efficient schedule for the building automation system. Second, the building owner can reduce internal staffing costs for the facility by using a third-party service provider.

Kohl's hopes Starbucks marketing whiz can spice up brand
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
Kohl's Corp.'s hiring of high-flying Starbucks executive Michelle Gass to fill a newly created, top-level post is, by itself, a big move for the Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based retailer. Gass — her name rhymes with "sauce" — didn't just figure prominently in taking the Frappuccino from a new iced-coffee offering to a $2 billion-a-year phenomenon that accounts for something like a fifth of Starbucks' sales. As right-hand woman to coffee-firm chief Howard Schultz, she played a critical role in Starbucks' turnaround of the past few years.
