ERs turning into UCs pose POS headaches
RBMA
While the Affordable Care Act's provisions have benefited many hospital systems, this is not the case for all. Small, free-standing community and rural hospitals in particular have struggled as the vision for the healthcare system of tomorrow is one that requires scale and networks and coordination — things they simply cannot match at present reimbursement levels.More

4 tips to prepare radiologists for ICD-10
Diagnostic Imaging (registration required)
Radiology is one of many specialties that will feel the effects of ICD-10. The tricky part, though, is that radiologists often rely on diagnostic information from referring physicians. This information may or may not be sufficient today in ICD-9, which means it will only be more complicated in ICD-10. Consider the following tips to better communicate with referring physicians and prepare for the added specificity inherent in the new coding system.More

Jobs up, jobs down — a sign of these healthcare times
Imaging Biz
It's a duo of developments that are completely unrelated yet similarly themed and coincidentally timed. Within the space of hours, one prestigious U.S. hospital system gives word of layoffs and another announces wage increases. Small practices rank cloud-based EHRs best in user satisfaction
By Scott E. Rupp

Launched in March, the program has been successful thus far for Indianapolis-based Northwest Radiology Network, President and CEO Dr. Kent Hansen, PhD, told AuntMinnie.com. More

Complying with the HIPAA nondisclosure rule
Physicians Practice (registration required)
Under the HIPAA Omnibus Rule, patients can request a restriction on a disclosure of PHI to a health plan if they pay out of pocket, in full for the service. Practices must agree to such a request unless they are required by law to bill that health plan (as is the case with some Medicaid plans). During a session at the Medical Group Management Association 2014 Annual Conference, Loretta Duncan, senior medical practice consultant with malpractice insurer the State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company in Brentwood, Tenn., shared some of her compliance tips: More

MSSP final rule panned by providers
HealthLeaders Media
Providers are bracing for a bumpy ride in the drive to quicken adoption of value-based payment at Medicare. The least risky accountable care option available on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services value-based payment palette was released last week with the Final Rule for the Medicare Shared Savings Program. States zero in on ObamaCare rescue plan
The Hill
It may be easier than expected for states to save their ObamaCare subsidies, if the Supreme Court rules against the law this month. Two states — Pennsylvania and Delaware — said this week they would launch their own exchanges, if needed, to keep millions of healthcare dollars flowing after the decision. Both want to use existing pieces of the federal health insurance exchange, like its website and call center.More
