New Assets Designed to Speed You Up Just Slowing You Down?
ASPYRA, LLC
Struggles to climb the learning curve can cost more than training. Imagine correcting each exam record for a patient when you could have changed it in one place and have it corrected on all the records if you just knew where to go. Every business has personnel, equipment, and system changes over time. Such ‘turn over’ often leaves you with limited personnel who know how to make the most effective use of your resources. How do you keep productivity high and expenses low? Look for training options such as Web based training, webinars, on-site training, and full classes.

mini-Survey: Impact of narrow networks
RBMA
RBMA is partnering with ACR to collect information about the emergence of narrow insurance networks and their impact on radiologists participating in Medicare Advantage networks or health plans offered through state or federal exchanges. The results may be used to help determine potential federal or state solutions to this growing issue.

Narrow networks are used by insurance companies to intentionally limit the total number of physicians participating in a managed care plan in hopes of better controlling patient healthcare costs. We are concerned about potential negative impacts from the use of narrow networks, which may include practices being dropped from plans — sometimes midyear — and inaccurate directory listings of physicians participating in narrow networks.

It should take no longer than five minutes to complete the survey. Your responses are confidential and will only be released in aggregated form.

Please click here to complete the survey by Jan. 30.

New rules to limit tactics on hospitals' fee collections
The New York Times
The Obama administration has adopted sweeping new rules to discourage nonprofit hospitals from using aggressive tactics to collect payments from low-income patients. Under the rules, nonprofit hospitals must now offer discounts, free care or other financial assistance to certain needy patients. Additionally, hospitals must try to determine whether a patient is eligible for assistance before they refer a case to a debt collector, send negative information to a credit agency, place a lien on a patient's home, file a lawsuit or seek a court order to seize a patient's earnings.

EHRs are no small investment, so it's important to get your practice back up to speed as quickly as possible post-implementation. But that's proving to be very difficult for many of you. Only about 47 percent of the more than 1,400 respondents to Physicians Practice's 2014 Technology Survey, sponsored by Kareo, said their EHR made their practice's work flow more efficient; 21 percent said it has remained about the same, and 33 percent said it has decreased.

Wireless mobile DR gets images into PACS faster than CR
Aunt Minnie (registration required)
Researchers from Hong Kong were able to obtain mobile x-ray images in their PACS network 70 percent sooner using a wireless portable digital radiography unit rather than a mobile x-ray system equipped with computed radiography plates, according to an article in the Journal of Digital Imaging. Images from a mobile DR unit sent via wireless LAN to a PACS were available a median of 6.8 minutes after the images were acquired, compared with 23 minutes when CR-based mobile units were used.

NPR: Big data raises big questions for healthcare providers
Imaging Biz
Often lost amid the hurrahs over the promise and potential of big data to transform healthcare is how unwieldy it can be to apply in real-world settings — and how wary clinical decision-makers can be when they're presented with it. Such was the gist of a news report that aired on National Public Radio on Jan. 5.

Study: 9.6 million could lose ObamaCare if subsidy challenge succeeds
The Hill
Roughly 9.6 million people could lose medical coverage on ObamaCare's exchanges if the Supreme Court rules that subsidies distributed by the federal marketplaces are invalid, according to a new study. Researchers with the RAND Corp., a nonpartisan research group, said such a ruling could cause "significant instability" and "threaten the viability of the individual health insurance market" in the 34 states where the federal government manages the exchange.
