DataMAXX — Did you know? Advantages of a data warehouse
RBMA
RBMA moved from traditional surveys to a data warehouse to serve our members better.
  • A data warehouse is more efficient than traditional surveys and allows us to collect more data annually — for A/R, compensation, productivity and practice cost.
  • Results are available much sooner. Data are cleaned electronically when entered rather than taking months to collect data, calculate indicators, identify outliers, contact participants via email with questions, and send static reports.
  • With DataMAXX, subscribers can enter data at any time and receive results for free, rather than being excluded if they didn't participate before the deadline.
  • Results are also customized. The subscriber's results are shown in a "your values" column next to the overall survey results, which isn't possible with a printed report.

Variation in a plug and play world
ASPYRA, LLC
Do standards mean your systems and equipment should be "plug and play?" Not necessarily. Standards are recommended practices and formats – they make communication between organizations and systems easier and faster, but there is no legal penalty for a company that chooses not to follow them. DICOM and HL7 are examples of healthcare communications standards for systems and equipment. HL7 (Health Level 7) is an industry standard dealing with the interchange of healthcare data between systems in a healthcare enterprise.

With EHRs, there's literacy and then there's literacy
Physicians Practice (registration required)
Prior to federal EHR mandates and bribes, many physicians were reluctant to adopt EHR. Having taken the plunge, fully 23 percent of EHR adopters are unhappy with their choice and are looking for replacements. Maybe the reluctant ones were onto something, but that is not the point of this article. Reluctance has been attributed to unfamiliarity/uneasiness about technology.

CAD costs, use on the rise
Health Imaging
As the prevalence of computer-assisted detection use rises to nearly 80 percent of Medicare mammography exams, so do the associated costs, reaching nearly $300 million in Medicare costs for an eight year period between 2001 and 2009, according to a study published in the December issue of the JAMA Internal Medicine.

Bundling of radiology codes into surgical codes continues
Aunt Minnie (registration required)
Not surprisingly, many of the 2015 changes to CPT codes made by the American Medical Association include the bundling of codes for imaging guidance — as well as radiological supervision and interpretation — into surgical codes. In addition to being aware of these and other code changes, radiologists and their staff must also go the extra mile to review the introductory notes at the start of certain sections of code documentation.

The total price tag for ObamaCare's insurance programs will be 20 percent less than expected, the government's budget office said. America's new healthcare economy: 3 trends to watch
Fortune
In his State of the Union address, President Obama was brief but to the point on healthcare. Declaring that about "10 million uninsured Americans finally gained the security of health coverage" because of the Affordable Care Act, he made clear he would veto any legislative attempt to roll it back. Thus, absent judicial action, the Act is here to stay.
