Scholarship deadlines EXTENDED!

Applications are still being accepted for vRad Scholarships to the 2014 Radiology Summit. vRad Scholarships are available to current members of RBMA who have not attended an RBMA meeting in the past three years. The deadline to submit your application has been extended to March 7.

The Bob Luther Emerging Leader Travel Scholarship was created to give RBMA members who are first time practice managers or those interested in becoming a practice manager a chance to experience the value of RBMA. The yearly scholarship recipient is awarded the opportunity to attend either the RBMA Radiology Summit or RBMA Fall Educational Conference. The application deadline for the 2014 scholarship has been extended to March 7.

2014 Call for Fellows opens

Fellow of the RBMA is a prestigious accomplishment to be held in high esteem by RBMA peers. RBMA is now seeking candidates for its 2014 class of fellows. The Call for Fellows packet contains fellowship background information, examples of the fellowship criteria, and the administrative procedures for how to submit your application. Applications must be submitted online. The deadline to submit an application is March 7.

ICD-10: CMS agrees to limited end-to-end testing

In an apparent nod to concerns raised by physicians, payors, hospitals and Congress, the federal government said that it would conduct limited "end-to-end testing" of the new ICD-10 diagnostic coding set this summer with "a small sample group of providers." "End-to-end testing includes the submission of test claims to [the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services] with ICD-10 codes and the provider's receipt of a Remittance Advice that explains the adjudication of the claims," CMS said in a memo to providers.

Three years ago, the radiology department at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences was performing and reading 6,500 PET/CT cases, a number that was rising. But that high volume meant staff was losing hours a day answering phone calls from referring clinicians looking for study interpretations. Patients returned for their follow-up clinical appointment, and 20 percent of the time, their PET/CT interpretations weren't ready.

Radiology residents love their iPads — most of the time

Is the iPad making a big difference in the lives of radiology residents who have them? For education, definitely. For clinical use, not quite yet, though the situation is evolving rapidly, according to a survey in the Journal of the American College of Radiology. Researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center found that a whopping 86 percent of residents given Apple iPads were using them daily or weekly for their residency education and clinical work.
