Merge Healthcare offers Clinical Decision Support: Standardized Processes for 2017 Deadlines webinar free to RBMA members
RBMA
In March 2014, as a part of the Protecting Access to Medicare Act, new legislation was enacted to mandate the use of Clinical Decision Support for advanced imaging. Because the act also delayed ICD-10 and the SGR, this component may have been overlooked. However, it will have a dramatic effect on the current imaging ordering process. Join co-hosts Julie Pekarek, vice president, solutions management at Merge Healthcare, and Michael Bohl, CEO at Radiology Group, PC, SC, as they present a webinar to help you understand both the legislation and the progress made to date on ensuring that providers are ready to implement it. We are at a critical point in this process, as the proposed workflow standards are currently out for public comment. Educate yourself on the rule and the current progress, so that you can add your voice to the dialogue.

April 30
11 a.m.-noon CDT

This webinar is free to RBMA members but requires registration to obtain call-in information.

Variation in a plug and play world
ASPYRA, LLC
Do standards mean your systems and equipment should be "plug and play?" Not necessarily. Standards are recommended practices and formats – they make communication between organizations and systems easier and faster, but there is no legal penalty for a company that chooses not to follow them. DICOM and HL7 are examples of healthcare communications standards for systems and equipment. HL7 (Health Level 7) is an industry standard dealing with the interchange of healthcare data between systems in a healthcare enterprise.

SGR bill left out device tax repeal
RBMA
After 17 years and more than a dozen separate acts by Congress, the universally despised sustainable growth rate formula was finally repealed this month through bipartisan Congressional action. However, to reach agreement among legislators, the more than $200 billion SGR deal was kept as narrow as possible. Numerous other legislative fixes were left out, including items backed by lobbying powerhouses like the American Association of Retired Persons.

MBMS' vice president of practice management, Jason Cavallaro, is featured speaker at the Northeast Chapter/RBMA meeting in Fort Lee, N.J.
MBMS
As the chapter's title sponsor, Cavallaro will represent MBMS as he delves into the topic of denial management. In today's radiology marketplace, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to get paid for the work that gets completed on a day-to-day basis. One of the primary contributors to decreased payments is a practice's denial rate. Regardless of whether your practice is handling the billing internally or using a third-party vendor, it is critical to know and understand the "how and why" surrounding denials and further define "root causes." Cavallaro will be exploring areas such as: ideal reporting, the "resolution process" and the numerous benefits as well as the various ways to reduce overall denials.

Doctors: We need to delay ICD-10 again
By Scott E. Rupp
This whole ICD-10 delay thing continues to bear some fruit, and there's still quite a bit of steam behind the effort. With rumors swirling that congressional leaders are finally ready to take action this year, many providers may not be sharing the joy, nor are they looking to celebrate. Healthcare Informatics recently commissioned a survey through QuantiaMD, and the results are not (ICD-10) friendly. Doctors are not backing down in their distaste for the mandate.

Health Imaging
Right up until the Senate officially sealed the fate of Medicare's flawed sustainable growth rate with a 92-8 vote, it was easy to see how it all might unravel. The Senate had already pushed the vote back as far as possible due to a two-week recess, concerns about the repeal bill's cost were becoming more vocal, and six amendments were to be voted on before the final SGR repeal vote.
