RBMA partners with ACR on practice management themed Bulletin
RBMA
The ACR Bulletin is the monthly magazine that keeps the American College of Radiology's 36,000 members informed on the latest developments in research, advocacy, technology, education and products. The ACR's April issue is dedicated to practice management, and several past articles from the RBMA Bulletin are featured prominently:
  • Creating Connections by David Byrd
  • Seven Essential Elements of an Effective Compliance Plan by Jeff Hayes, MS, CHC, RT (R) (MR)
  • The Business of Billing: Evaluating Managed Care Companies and Their Payment Practices by Taylor Moorehead
Dr. Mark Bernardy, who is the ACR Director on the RBMA Board of Directors, came up with the idea of a practice management themed ACR Bulletin. "Many radiologists are playing a greater role in managing their practices," said Dr. Bernardy, "and RBMA is a great resource for this information; RBMA involvement was a natural."

How healthcare payors are tricking practices into poor contracts
Physicians Practice
By P.J. Cloud-Moulds: Something happened the other day, and I wanted to share it with you. It seems that since there are so few providers in-network with the plans offered through the health insurance exchanges, Blue Shield is really reaching to try to get practices to sign up. I have noticed that they are faxing over mini forms for front-office staff to fill out. The forms state that Blue Shield needs to "update our records with your current information."

What radiologists should know about the CMS billing data release
Diagnostic Imaging (registration required)
Earlier this month, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for the first time published billing data for more than 880,000 healthcare providers nationwide. This information, which includes the physician's name and work address, is now searchable by other providers, patients and payors. The agency's decision to reveal this data has been controversial throughout the healthcare industry as a whole.

The price of the ICD-10 delay
By Pamela Lewis Dolan
As the debate took place over whether the transfer to the ICD-10 code set should be delayed or go on as scheduled, one statistic was often repeated: a one-year delay would cost the healthcare system between $1 billion and $6.6 billion. Now that a delay is official — pushing ICD-10 adoption to October 2015 was included in the "doc fix" vote, which also kicked the SGR can down the road for another year — many are left with uncertainty over what this delay means and whether the prediction of a multibillion dollar loss will be realized. So where did the numbers originate and on what are they based?

Choices, mandates, and decisions in the age of meaningful use
Radiology Business Journal
The 2014 technology-acquisition roadmap looks a lot like the map from last year, which is to say that it resembles a bare-bones diagram that often fails to show road closures and detours. Many radiology directors in hospitals and private practices have nonetheless navigated the IT/workflow roadblocks, realizing that many of the hurdles have come courtesy of meaningful use.

Healthcare reform puts vise grips on physicians
HealthLeaders Media
When the enrollment period opened for the new health insurance exchanges in 2013, it was a signal to physicians that a key element of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act had, indeed, arrived and would start to play out in their waiting rooms this year. Other changes providers are now contending with include the implementation of ICD-10, public disclosure of any financial gain doctors receive from drug and device manufacturers because of the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, and attesting to meaningful use requirements.
