All RBMA corporate members who provide a product or service to radiology practices may be listed in the July/August 2014 Buyers Guide issue of the RBMA Bulletin FREE. This issue will include informative articles on technology, plus the added value of listing industry vendors.

The issue will be mailed to over 2,100 RBMA members who will keep it on their shelf for future reference or pass it along to other decision makers.

The deadline to update your company profile and category listings is May 15.

Mixed news for radiology billing managers: the House and Senate have passed the "Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014," which, among other provisions, delays the 24 percent Medicare reimbursement cut for another year, replacing it with a 0.5 percent increase.

How to broach out-of-pocket costs with patients

Physicians should take the pulse on a patient's financial health as well as medical needs when making care decisions, two physicians proposed in a viewpoint published online April 21 in JAMA. They offered tips to make the process easier. "In our view, physicians have an ethical duty, at a minimum, to discuss out-of-pocket costs with patients in the same way that they would discuss the adverse effects of a treatment," wrote Kevin R. Riggs, MD, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Peter A. Ubel, MD, of Duke University School of Medicine.

Imaging lands high on list of low-value procedures

A new list of 26 low-value medical procedures published in JAMA Internal Medicine includes a dozen imaging exams. The exams — defined as procedures that cost a lot of money without yielding significant benefits — could be costing Medicare as much as $8.5 billion a year, according to the authors. Services defined as low-value, while constituting less than 3 percent of Medicare spending, affect nearly half of the program's beneficiaries in a given year.
