CMS issues health insurance exchange proposed rules

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has unveiled its proposed rules governing the operation of health insurance exchanges which aim to facilitate and regulate the sale of private coverage to millions of people beginning Jan. 1, 2014, under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Most of the proposal focuses on program integrity for state marketplaces and insurance companies offering coverage in the federally facilitated exchanges. The rule intends to safeguard federal money and consumers.

Medicare spends nearly $1 billion more on common lab tests than other payors

In 2011, Medicare paid between 18 and 30 percent more than other payors for the top 20 most common lab tests, and could have saved almost $1 billion if it paid providers the lowest rate in each geographic area negotiated by other payors, according to a report from the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General.

Meds or therapy? PET scan predicts best treatment

A study published in JAMA Psychiatry suggests that a PET scan could replace the trial-and-error approach in determining whether therapy or medication is the best course of treatment for a patient suffering depression. A multidisciplinary team at Emory University led by Dr. Helen Mayberg, a neurologist and professor of psychiatry, neurology and radiology, sought a brain biomarker that could predict the best course of treatment for an individual patient.
