NEWS FOR BILLING MANAGERS
High-deductible health plans and radiology
Much of the growing influence of consumerism and patient satisfaction on the healthcare marketplace can be traced back to the advent of high-deductible health plans. By shifting ever-larger portions of their medical bills onto patients' backs, payors have created a newly selective group of customers. And radiology, with so many high-ticket procedures in its arsenal, has proven especially vulnerable to the change.
4 keys to better charge capture
Ever-changing payment rules require hospitals, radiology practices and other imaging facilities to perform more detailed reimbursement analyses to identify where opportunities exist to appropriately maximize reimbursement. It's important that all radiology professionals understand these four key areas of financial concern impacting the reimbursement process for both professional and technical services.

Career questions in radiology
The radiology job market has had its ups and downs over the past 20 years. A surplus of workers in the late 1990s turned into a shortage in the 2000s. Now, a recent survey of practicing radiologists finds that many feel overworked and fear they must delay retirement. These radiologists would prefer to cut their hours worked to the tune of 5 to 14 percent, depending on the individual.
5 ways to help lead your medical practice through a challenging time
By Patrick Watterson, PA-C: Recently, we suffered a multi-part network crash at our practice of four locations, 20 providers, and 180-plus staff that prevented access to our EHR and practice management system. The first few hours were tolerable as these things happen from time to time, but then the magnitude of the problem became larger as more and more vendors had to be involved.
Medicare Advantage carriers see 'no choice' but to accept cuts
With Medicare programs taking a $300 billion hit to help fund value-based healthcare reforms under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, Medicare Advantage health plans are feeling the pinch. Among the lawmakers in attendance, last week's House Ways and Means healthcare panel hearing on Medicare Advantage featured partisan fireworks over reimbursement rate cuts to the value-based healthcare insurance program.
Insecure communications costly for hospitals
When a doctor treating a North Carolina nursing home patient asked a nurse to text the resident's lab results, only the two authorized medical professionals saw the message — but the residential facility ended up paying a high price for using this inherently insecure messaging medium. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services gave the unnamed skilled nursing facility an "e-level deficiency," meaning there was "no actual harm but potential for more than minimal harm."
Are radiology administrators getting more optimistic?
Aunt Minnie (registration required)
Are things looking up for radiology administrators? That's the tantalizing suggestion from third-quarter data from the Medical Imaging Confidence Index, a forward-looking barometer of administrator confidence. While the numbers aren't definitive, they do hint at a second consecutive quarter of improving sentiment. For the second straight quarter, each of the index's five elements showed growth.
