Three days left to complete the RBMA miniSurvey: Technical Component Costs

In its proposed rule for the CY 2015 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services sought information on technical component costs for non-physician malpractice premiums and equipment maintenance by modality. RBMA would like to respond to CMS' request for information and asks for your help.

Please complete the survey if you are employed by an imaging center or IDTF that is paid under the MPFS. The survey does not apply to professional component-only practices or to joint ventures that are paid under the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System.

The survey is anonymous, and confidentiality of your response is assured. Only aggregated results will be reported.

Steering patients to low-cost providers triggers MRI price cuts

Steering patients away from hospitals to lower-cost MRI facilities decreased costs by 18.7 percent and triggered provider price cuts, according to a recent study of price transparency efforts. Authors Sze-jung Wu, PhD, a senior research analyst at HealthCore, and colleagues wrote that costs were reduced by $220 per MRI by encouraging patients through phone calls to use low-cost non-hospital facilities instead of hospitals.

Growing trend: Hospitals post procedure prices online

It's a trend that's been growing across the country. Hospitals listing prices for procedures on their websites. Some states are even mandating it. While New York isn't one of them, a handful of hospitals across the state are making their prices public. "We started this process in the fall of last year, so it's about a nine month probably start to finish project. We did a lot of research," said Kelli Harris, the chief financial officer for Crouse Hospital.

EHR adoption slow, information exchange lagging

Thousands of hospitals and physicians in small office practices will be left out of meaningful use incentive payments, and may eventually be financially penalized, unless they speed up adoption of electronic health records systems to satisfy meaningful use 2 requirements, analysis indicates. The findings of two papers published in Health Affairs are based on survey data showing how many providers have the essential system components required to obtain financial incentives and avoid penalties under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009.
