Testing will occur Nov. 17 for the November 2014 testing week; March 2, 2015, for the March 2015 testing week and June 1, 2015, for the June 2015 testing week.

CMS releases ICD-10 training and preparation webcast for small practices

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released a webcast with information on ICD-10 training and preparation from the "Road to 10" tool. Accessible through the "Road to 10" link on the CMS website, the webcast discusses key elements to include in your training plan. This is the second webcast in the new "Road to 10" series. Four more webcasts will follow — all aimed at helping small physician practices get ready for ICD-10 by the Oct. 1, 2015, compliance date.

Regulation should keep health IT safe without slowing innovation

Dr. David Hirschorn: In 1989, the FDA started to grapple with computers as medical devices. The agency classified anything running software as a device under the FDA Policy for the Regulation of Computer Products. But as computer chips running software began to pervade every new medical device introduced on the market, the situation grew too complex to view them all as computer products, and in 2005 the FDA withdrew its policy.

CMS final rule extends Stage 2, delays requirements

CMS announced in a final rule that it will delay some requirements of its meaningful use program, allowing providers to continue to receive incentive payments if they haven't yet adopted electronic health records software that was certified under the 2014 criteria. According to the announcement, providers will not be penalized for failing to progress to Stage 2.

US healthcare spending to fall over next decade

U.S. healthcare spending will slow by 1.5 percent over the next decade, but will grow by 2 percent this year, according to a report from the Office of the Actuary at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The report, published in the September issue of Health Affairs, said that healthcare spending for 2013 was projected to grow by 3.6 percent because of a sluggish economy and rising costs of private insurance plans.

Doctors say electronic records waste time
U.S. News & World Report
Doctors complain that they waste an average of 48 minutes a day, or four hours a week, when they record their patients' health information into digital records, a new study shows. The results were collected in a small survey, whose findings were put into a letter that was published in the online edition of JAMA Internal Medicine.
