ACR launches new 'Mammography Saves Lives' campaign

The American College of Radiology has launched a website that contains marketing materials that local practices can use in their upcoming October Breast Cancer Awareness month marketing push. The website includes customizable TV and radio ads, posters, brochures, etc. Practices can access the materials at www.mammographysaveslives.org.

Silva: Bad data is root of problem with CT and MRI cost centers

Acknowledging and fixing the flawed capital cost data that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is using to justify proposed cuts in CT and MRI reimbursement is the responsibility of all radiology professionals writes Ezequiel Silva III, MD, in the latest issue of Radiology Business Journal. Noting that the Deficit Reduction Act of 1997 forever linked office and hospital payments, Silva writes that all stakeholders must work together on a new reclassification system that can better allocate capital costs related to imaging.

MICI Q3: Medicare outlook still bedevils radiation administrators

Radiology administrators remained deeply concerned about future Medicare reimbursement rates, showing little confidence that they will receive adequate Medicare payments in the third quarter of 2013, according to data from the Medical Imaging Confidence Index. The forward-looking index surveyed 144 imaging directors and hospital managers, asking their opinions of five key trends typically encountered by radiology administrators.

Medical display market to swell past $3 billion by 2017

The global market for medical-grade displays is projected to jump 29 percent between 2012 and 2017, rising from $2.5 billion to $3.2 billion, according to market information firm IHS. IHS outlined its projections in its "Medical Displays — World — 2013" report. While the majority of the market's revenue in the coming years will be generated by patient-monitor displays, the fastest growing segments will be radiology and surgical displays, according to the report.

United Healthcare introduces online bill payments

United Healthcare, one of the two largest health insurers in the U.S., set an important precedent when it recently announced its introduction of an online bill payment service that enables United members to pay their bills to healthcare providers by credit card or bank transfer. United, which has integrated the online bill-pay capability with its claims processing system, is the first payor to supply a service of this kind, said Victoria Bogatyrenko, VP of products innovation for United.

Why payors like defined contribution programs

Change keeps on coming to the health insurance industry. Pittsburgh-based Highmark Health Services is in the process of expanding its defined contribution products to large group employers. The expansion follows a successful year-long pilot with small group employers (fewer than 100 employees) that attracted 60 companies and about 6,000 covered lives, says Bill Brown, manager of digital distribution for the giant Blue Cross Blue Shield affiliate.
