Appeals court tosses Virginia challenges to health reform law

A federal appeals court overturned a lower court and rejected Virginia's challenge to the federal health care reform law, ruling that the state lacked the standing to proceed with the suit. The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals court tossed aside a ruling by U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson, who had sided with Virginia's Republican Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli and ruled that the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act was unconstitutional. More

ACR blasts proposed cuts

The ACR called on CMS to scrap proposed payment cuts in the Medicare Fee Schedule Rule for 2012, saying the reduction is "scientifically unfounded, based on flawed assumptions and may limit patients' ability to receive efficient care." In a letter commenting on the proposed rule, the group also took issue with purported statements by CMS Administrator Donald Berwick, MD, during a recent Midwest tour of imaging facilities. More

Automated entry of procedure codes in radiology reports has decreased the percentage of errors compared to manual entry, according to a Massachusetts General Hospital report published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology. The hospital's radiology department switched from manual to automated entry of procedure codes in 2007. More

HHS: More than 5.4 million patients affected by data breaches in 2010

In U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' annual report to Congress, Secretary Kathleen Sebelius reported that between Jan. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2010, breaches involving 500 or more individuals were less than 1 percent of the breaches reported, but accounted for more than 99 percent of the more than 5.4 million individuals who were affected. The health care employment picture may be rosy compared to other sectors, but the outlook for U.S. not-for-profit hospitals is negative, according to a new report from Moody's Investors Service. Titled "U.S. Not-for-Profit Hospital Medians Show Resiliency Against Industry Headwinds But Challenges Still Support Negative Outlook," the report indicates that most such hospitals saw weakening revenue growth in 2010.
