Has PACS ignited an epidemic of burnout?

Nearly half of U.S. physicians responding to a survey about burnout reported at least one symptom of burnout, researchers reported in a study published online in Archives of Internal Medicine. The researchers reported that radiologists face a slightly higher than average rate of burnout.

Integrating imaging informatics in a health system: Part 1

The recent wave of healthcare consolidation is creating provider networks with a patchwork of imaging informatics technology — from PACS to RIS to 3D — that can present major integration headaches. North Shore-LIJ Health System recently faced such a task and shared its experience in conquering integration challenges. As the institution worked toward its goal of a system-wide integrated imaging environment, NSLIJ learned the value of organization-wide standards and policies, and the need for collaboration between radiology IT and hospital IT staff and with external clinical departments.

Imaging-center growth hits the wall in 2013

Persistent decreases in outpatient imaging reimbursement and a dramatic decline in volume finally took their toll on the imaging-center market, with a resulting 3.65 percent decline in the total number of freestanding outpatient imaging centers. This is the first contraction since the dip that followed the stock-market crash in 2009. Over 10 years, the freestanding outpatient imaging-center market has exhibited consistent year-over-year increases (except in 2009) in the number of centers.

Most radiologists strive to achieve two goals in their practice — to "do good," by being a quality practitioner and helping patients; and to "do well" in terms of financial rewards. Healthcare reform could launch despite a federal shutdown

U.S. State officials behind the launch of President Barack Obama's healthcare reform on Oct. 1 say they could weather a federal government shutdown, though the scenario would add new pressure to the political attacks and technical issues that have weighed on the program's introduction. Several officials running new state-based insurance exchanges that are due to open for enrollment next month said they expected to have access to funds in the case of a shutdown.

Healthcare spending to equal one-fifth of GDP by 2022

Healthcare spending in the U.S. will grow at an average annual rate of 5.8 percent from 2012 through 2022, which is 1.0 percentage point faster than projected gross domestic product growth, according to an article published online ahead of print in Health Affairs. At that rate, healthcare's share of GDP by 2022 will rise to 19.9 percent, up from 17.9 percent in 2011.
