The National Labor Relations Board strikes down overbroad social media policy
RBMA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) recently struck down a social media policy promulgated by Costco Wholesale Corporation (Costco) as violative of Section 8(a)(1) of the National Labor Relations Act (the Act), which makes it an unfair labor practice for an employer to interfere with, restrain or coerce employees in the exercise of their rights guaranteed by Section 7 of the Act (see 29 U.S.C. §157, §158). Physicians participating in ACOs may be more exclusive than they think

Before signing on with an accountable care organization (ACO), it is important for physicians to consider the impact on their ability (and the ability of other physicians in their medical practice) to participate in other ACOs. More

Estate and gift tax cliff is looming
RBMA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Since 2010, under Federal estate and gift tax law, every individual has an exemption of $5.12 million, assuming he or she has not previously made taxable gifts. Given proper estate planning, this exemption means a couple could shield slightly more than $10 million from tax at death. More

5 tips for improving radiology billing and coding
Diagnostic Imaging (registration required)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For radiologists, the process of billing and coding is often viewed as cumbersome. It can be, at best, difficult to remain up to-date on all the regulations and individual payer changes — let alone understand them. Yet it's imperative for the practice to thrive. Even when radiologists outsource their billing responsibilities, it's still important for them to be aware of what they can do to aid in the processes and improve — or secure — financial outcomes. Raising the voices of radiology
Radiology Business Journal via ImagingBiz    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Every business has its stressors, and certainly, the past year has been an economic challenge for many different industries. Radiology, however, seems to have endured more than its fair share of obstacles. Having struggled to adapt to the seemingly arbitrary reimbursement cuts of the DRA, which went into effect in 2007, outpatient radiology has now been hit with a far more significant reimbursement cut by CMS. Mastering marketing
Imaging Economics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Radiologists are smart. Spending upward of a decade in the rigorous exam culture of college and medical school, doctors-to-be must have the right answers or find a new career. Nevertheless, doctors often stumble on a seemingly simple question: "What differentiates you from your competitors?" It's not a question that will make or break anyone's MCAT score. In fact, it's not even on the test. More

Insurers get ready for exchanges, but exchanges may not be ready
Kaiser Health News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The attraction of the 2010 health law for insurance companies is obvious: Millions of new customers and billions in new spending. Those dollars will flow through state exchanges, online marketplaces where customers can shop for insurance. "This is the largest expansion since the Medicare program in 1965," said Kelly A. Barnes, health industries leader for PricewaterhouseCoopers, an accounting and consulting firm. More
