The impact of the ICD-10 delays

Although Congressional action has postponed the ICD-10 coding mandate until at least October 1, 2015, preparations to adopt it continue at a slower pace, even though physician opposition to the mandate remains steadfast. "We were prepared to be ready October 1 of 2014," says Randy McCleese, vice president of information systems and CIO at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky.

CMS includes DBT payment codes in 2015 Medicare rates

In a major boost for digital breast tomosynthesis, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services included payment codes for the exam in its final Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System, issued last week. The DBT codes are among a collection of changes that for the most part go easy on radiology and radiation oncology — unlike in past years, where both disciplines were hit with major reimbursement reductions.

Study: Doctors using EHRs spend more time on administrative tasks

Physicians who use electronic health record systems experience more administrative burdens than their peers who use paper records, according to a study published in the International Journal of Health Services, FierceEMR reports. For the study, researchers from the City University of New York analyzed data from the 2008 Health Tracking Physician Survey — the most recent available — to gauge how much time physicians spend on administrative tasks.

Smart shopper: Approaching price transparency in radiology

In terms of consumer transparency, radiology patients do not have access to information that would assist them in choosing a provider based on quality of care or price of services, argued a recent article published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology. Instead, they are given pricing information from private and public entities that results in patients "price shopping" among radiologists when looking for care.
