RBMA to launch new online learning division — RBMA U
RBMA
Coming this spring, RBMA will be offering an online education portal based on the RBMA Common Body of Knowledge that will allow individuals seeking new skills in radiology business management to learn on their own time and at their own pace. The first course to be released, Radiology 101, will provide an overview of fundamental management processes; planning, organizing, controlling, and leading as applied to radiology. It is designed as a survey course for new managers or for those interested in exploring a career in radiology business.

RBMA U is currently seeking qualified instructors. Please review the job description and submit an application if you are interested.

Family Friendly Workplace Ordinance: Is it the San Francisco treat that will sweep the nation?

The San Francisco Family Friendly Workplace Ordinance (FFWO) was passed in October and will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2014, for all San Francisco businesses with 20 or more employees. The FFWO aims to “reduce family flight” from San Francisco by affording eligible employees the right to request special arrangements from their employer designed to assist with care giving responsibilities.

Finding out how much an X-ray costs sounds like a simple question. But it is actually very difficult to get an answer. In Massachusetts, a new state law requires insurers to be able to tell members how much a test, treatment or surgery will cost. But while the new law pulls back the curtain on prices of health procedures to some degree, the burden is still on the patient to ask for information. As a recent test drive of the new law showed, there are quite a few hoops for patients to jump through.

Consumers must also be held accountable for medical credit cards

Consumers interested in various veterinary or medical services that are typically out-of-pocket may pay for those services with a credit card. But if they don't have a credit card due to a less-than-stellar credit rating, they may have to turn to a medical credit card. These come in the form of iCare and CareCredit. These medical credit cards have come under fire lately in a recent New York Times article and follow-up editorial. The articles shine a light on potential consumer abuses by these medical card companies. But it's important to avoid completely exonerating the consumer from any responsibility when applying for credit.

Debate over delaying individual mandate grows louder

The American Academy of Actuaries is warning that delaying the individual mandate could affect risk pools and claims in 2014 and beyond. Health plans say they cannot work without this key provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Insurers and actuaries are warning that extending the enrollment period and delaying the individual mandate under the Affordable Care Act will create "potentially adverse consequences" for the law.
