Variation in a Plug and Play World

Do standards mean your systems and equipment should be "plug and play?" Not necessarily. Standards are recommended practices and formats – they make communication between organizations and systems easier and faster, but there is no legal penalty for a company that chooses not to follow them. DICOM and HL7 are examples of healthcare communications standards for systems and equipment. HL7 (Health Level 7) is an industry standard dealing with the interchange of healthcare data between systems in a healthcare enterprise.

RBMA U highlight: Marketing and Business Development
RBMA
Radiology Business 101 is comprised of eight modules based on the RBMA Common Body of Knowledge (CBK). The sixth module, Marketing and Business Development, covers developing marketing goals and a plan, applying marketing research, identifying your target audience, regulatory concerns, branding and messaging, marketing the hospital-based practice, and quality and customer satisfaction.

The Marketing and Business Development module includes the following six courses:

Understanding meaningful use penalties in 2015
Physicians Practice (registration required)
Starting in 2015, if you are an eligible provider and have not attested to meaningful use of your EHR for 2014, you will be hit with a 1 percent penalty on your Medicare reimbursement. The penalties will increase to 2 percent in 2016 and 3 percent in 2017. If you're already enrolled in the program, make sure you attest for 2014 by Feb. 28, 2015, to avoid the 2015 penalty.

Private ACO contracts: More downside risk and upfront payments

Half of accountable care organization providers hold contracts with private insurers, according to a study published in the December edition of the American Journal of Managed Care. The analysis is one of the first to shed light on the nature of ACO contracts with commercial payers. Medicare launched ACO pilots in 2005 and private payers began to test the waters five years later.

If more U.S. households are feeling squeezed by the cost of healthcare this year, they aren't showing it, according to a new Gallup poll. By most indicators, U.S. households have reason to fret over the cost of healthcare. The number of households with high deductibles continues to grow. Wages have not recovered from the recession. As of this year, the uninsured must get a health plan under Obamacare.
