The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III (RCAF CC-177) carries four times the load and travels more than twice as far as the CC-130J Hercules aircraft. Its design characteristics give it the ability to operate into and out of short runways and austere airfields carrying large, outsize equipment such as armoured vehicles, helicopters, earth movers and disaster response. Yellow Wings 2013 is about taking as many as 550 top-performing air cadets flying in a BCATP-era vintage aircraft. We believe the experience of flight will kindle in them the desire to excel, in everything they set their sites on. Vintage Wings tells us, the 2013 Yellow Wings Program will do more than just fly. We will tell the story of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, Canada's greatest contribution to victory in the Second World War and, with the support of Raytheon Canada, we will be promoting the benefits of an education in math and sciences, and a career in engineering and aerospace technology. OP HUSKY AND THE RCAF

On July 10th 1943, Canadian soldiers landed at Pachino, Sicily, marking the beginning of the Sicilian Campaign. While this campaign is little known, "Operation Husky" represented the first independent role for Canadian soldiers in the Second World War. They fought with courage and knocked the pins out of the German defences in Sicily. Their success came at a cost of over 560 men in honour of those who fought and those who fell. We are organizing a memorial capaign for the operation's 70th anniversary. Our campaign begins on the beaches of Pachino on July 10th, 2013 and features two main ceremonies. More

The Year of the Korean War Veteran coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and South Korea. June 25, 2010 was the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War. On that date in 1950, the North Korean Army crossed into South Korea at about the 38th Parallel. This began an uninterrupted drive that forced South Korean and United States troops into a small corner of the Korean Peninsula that became known as the Pusan Perimeter. More

Pentagon lowers F-35 performance bar

The U.S. Department of Defense is lowering the performance bar for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter according to a new report by the Pentagon's director of operational test and evaluation. The specifications for all three variants pertaining to transonic acceleration and sustained turn rates have been reduced. Worst hit in terms of acceleration is the US Navy's F-35C carrier-based model. More

War of 1812 veterans to get their due

Commemorative plaques will be placed on the graves of War of 1812 veterans thanks to a federal investment in a historical group based in Penetanguishene. Funding of $140,000 for the Historic Military Establishment of Upper Canada was announced by Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton, who visited St. James Church for the occasion. More

Harper acknowledges Canadian forces committed to short-term aid to Malian military

A tweet by the president of Mali forced the Conservative government to admit that it has committed Canadian military forces to help support the war against Al Qaeda linked rebels in that country. The Citizen published an article on the commitment of Canadian military logistical support to Mali's military, Prime Minister Stephen Harper acknowledged that Canada was indeed involved. More
