Magellan Aerospace has secured an engine maintenance contract from Public Services and Procurement Canada for the F404 engine.
Under the contract, the company will provide repair and overhaul services, engineering and field support services, technical and publication management services, and supply chain management services for the F404-GE-400 engines that power Royal Canadian Air Force's fleet of CF-188 Hornet aircraft.
A team of U.S. warplane experts has been invited to brief Canadian officials on what the Royal Canadian Air Force can expect when it takes delivery of a fleet of Super Hornet jets.
The briefing, expected to take place at the Canadian embassy in Washington, D.C., is crucial for the Liberal government as it grapples with introducing a new fighter jet into service and its impact on Canada's air defences.
The Trudeau government has begun talks with the Pentagon for a foreign military sale of 18 Super Hornets, at a cost of $5-$7 billion.
Senator John McCain, the Republican leader of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is proposing the Pentagon buy 300 inexpensive, off-the-shelf fighter aircraft. These cheaper aircraft would be used instead of higher end fighter jets, which are expensive to operate.
The new aircraft would be used in permissive environments — ie. Iraq and the war against ISIL — where enemy forces don't operate their own aircraft.
McCain believes 200 of these aircraft could be bought by 2022 by the USAF.

An air force training contract will extend past its 2021 deadline after the Government of Canada announced earlier this month that they would be extending the contract by two years.
The Canadian government's Department of National Defence recently announced that they would be extending their contract with aviation technology company CAE for the continuation of the NATO Flying Training in Canada program by an additional two years.

Milt Schmidt, the last surviving member of hockey's famed "Kraut Line" and a former member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, died Jan. 4, 2017, in Massachusetts. He was 98, and the oldest living former member of the National Hockey League.
Despite a series of hurdles, including a hardware issue with its refuelling boom last summer, the Boeing KC-46 Pegasus is now on pace for first delivery to the United States Air Force by the end of 2017. Boeing recently announced a $2.1 billion award for 15 more air-to-air refuelling tankers as part of a low-rate initial production (LRIP) lot signed in August 2016, bringing the total LRIP production to 34 aircraft.
They won't fly again, but some vintage aircraft will soon have new life in the National Air Force Museum of Canada.
An Avro Anson Mark II reconnaissance plane and a Beechcraft Model 18 Expeditor now occupy opposite ends of the museum's restoration workshop. Both will be on display within a few months, museum spokesman Josh Bambrough said.
"It's exciting when we get new aircraft and it adds to our ever-growing collection," he said.
But much work still lies ahead.
