4 of the RCAF's 6 challenger jets at the end of their service life

Four of Canada's six Challenger jets have reached the end of their service life, but National Defence has yet to retire them or develop a plan to replace them. An analysis conducted for the military's second in command says two models of the executive jet, which has often been at centre of political storms, are "at the end of their upgradeability and would require additional capital investment" if they were to remain flying past 2014.

In the early 2000s, the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces began considering a new location to accommodate the growing needs of the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM), as their current facility in Dwyer Hill, ON, was too small. Following the identification of this requirement, an extensive options analysis was conducted in 2005 and 2006 to determine the best possible option.

Peter Mackay says veterans will see increase in service because of government cuts at Veterans Affairs

Former Defence Minister Peter MacKay says that the large scale cuts at Veterans Affairs will mean that veterans will see an increase in services. Eight Veterans Affairs offices are being shut down across the country. Veterans Affairs Canada is also in the midst of cutting a total of 800 jobs from its workforce of 3,600. But MacKay, now justice minister, says veterans should actually see an increase in services provided at more than 650 Service Canada centres. He noted that veterans with caseworkers will continue to receive services at home.

$35 million military plane upgrades highlight Canada's procurement delays

The government estimates it will cost nearly $35 million to extend the life of 14 Canadian CP-140 Aurora long-range patrol aircraft. In what amounts to another tacit admission that Canada's military is somehow structurally unable to swiftly procure the gear it needs, the Conservative government has quietly announced it's restarting a twice-cancelled plan to extend the life of the CP-140 Aurora maritime patrol aircraft.

After a tense budget battle last year, the Air Force is gearing up to defend what service officials have called a series of hard choices about what to keep and what to dump. With finances tight, the biggest fight is over whether to modernize older platforms or risk a capabilities gap while pushing that funding toward recapitalization programs. Charged with keeping the combat air forces ready to go at a moment's notice is Gen. Michael Hostage, head of Air Combat Command.
