Military wants anti-missile defence for PM's plane

The Canadian military is looking for an air defence system to protect its VIP aircraft, including the one used by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, from surface-to-air missiles. And one of Israel's top defence contractors, Elbit Systems, has been working behind-the-scenes for months to get in on the anticipated project. The downing of Malaysian Airlines jet MH-17 may have given defence officials more urgency.

Gen. Hostage: Manned, unmanned mix needed In Iraq

The Pentagon is using a mix of manned and unmanned intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) assets to monitor the ongoing situation in Iraq, a top U.S. Air Force general said recently. "It's what we call non-traditional ISR," Gen. Mike Hostage, the head of U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command, said.

Unmanned helicopter lifted more than 4.5 million pounds of cargo during Afghan mission

After lifting more than 4.5 million pounds of cargo and conducting thousands of delivery missions for the U.S. Marine Corps, the Lockheed Martin and Kaman Aerospace Corporation K-MAX cargo unmanned aircraft system has returned to the United States following a nearly three-year deployment in Afghanistan, LM noted in a news release.

Cochrane resident helps restore Cold War era fighter jet

Alberta unveils new Canadian Armed Forces licence plate

Officials with the provincial government unveiled their design for the Canadian Armed Forces new licence plate, which will be available soon. The new plates, that complement existing veterans' licence plates featuring a poppy in honour of former and current members of the Canadian Armed Forces, bear artwork called "Fallen Comrades of the PPCLI."

CP-140 Aurora used to provide surveillance during Manitoba flooding

With relentless heavy rain this month, water levels in southern Manitoba began to rise along the Assiniboine River between Brandon, Portage La Prairie and Winnipeg. With flooding to dangerous levels, the provincial government declared a state of emergency and requested military assistance to help protect property, agricultural land and individuals living in the areas affected.

RCAF Griffon, Hercules rescue injured hiker near Montreal River

The crews of an RCAF Griffon helicopter and Hercules aircraft assisted the Ontario Provincial Police with an early morning evacuation of an injured hiker from a deep crevasse 90 kilometers north of Sault Ste. Marie recently. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, Trenton received a request from the Ontario Provincial Police in North Bay requesting federal assistance in the rescue.

The Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) has taken the lead in organizing this year's Aerospace, Defence and Security Expo (ADSE) in Abbotsford. This high profile industry event has been in operation for three years and has developed a stellar reputation as a world class aerospace expo. It is the only event of its kind in western Canada and is scheduled for August 7-8, 2014, immediately ahead of the Abbotsford International Airshow that takes place on August 8-10.

The Great War's Shadow: New Perspectives on the First World War

The Department of History and Centre for Military and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary invite academics and graduate students from around the world to share new analyses of the First World War. The conference is titled: The Great War's Shadow: New Perspectives on the First World War. The conference takes place in Calgary and Lake Louise, AB, from September 25-28, 2014. 70th anniversary of the founding of the RCAF's first 3 squadrons dedicated to air transport operations

The National Air Force Museum of Canada's Ad Astra stone program has proven very successful both at raising funds for the museum and providing a modest but poignant means of recognizing those who have served, or are serving, with Canada's Air Force. As the program was implemented in 1995, five decades after the end of the Second World War, it is unsurprising that those most deserving of recognition — those who gave their lives during the war... are least represented amongst the over 10,500 stones in the RCAF Memorial Air Park.
