Canada looks at Royal Navy choppers

The Harper government may be ready to throw in the towel on the purchase of long-delayed CH-148 Cyclone helicopters and has gone as far as sending a military team to Britain to evaluate other aircraft. Defence sources say the team, which included an officer from the air force directorate of air requirements branch, visited a southern base in the United Kingdom recently to look at Royal Navy HM-1 Merlin helicopters.

CFB Petawawa to get name change in latest government rebranding

Canadian Forces Base Petawawa will soon be no more. The military installation in the Ottawa Valley is in line for a name change as part of the Conservative government's rebranding of the military. It will be called 4th Canadian Division Support Base Petawawa, although that new name has yet to be officially announced and a date for the renaming is still undecided, say army officers.

Boeing demonstrates advanced super hornet

Boeing reported that during three weeks of testing in August, it successfully demonstrated that its F/A-18 Advanced Super Hornet — fitted with new conformal fuel tanks (CFT) and an enclosed weapons pod (EWP) — will be able to outperform perceived threats well beyond 2030 in the anti-access, aerial denial environment. The advancement in capability is thanks to a suite of low-cost modifications, including enhanced stealth capabilities.

Sea Kings possible replacement familiar to Canadians

The irony won't be lost on military observers in Canada and around the world. Twenty years after Prime Minister Jean Chrétien cancelled a $5 billion contract to replace Canada's already aging fleet of Sea King helicopters with the British-Italian EH 101, Canadian military officials are kicking the tires of that same helicopter, though it goes by a different name these days.

Space agency's new face lands

Jeremy Hansen's arrival on the Gatineau airstrip is nothing if not dramatic. The former Canadian Forces fighter pilot turned astronaut looks every bit the military hero as he taxis up the runway in a gold F-86 Sabre, the vintage aircraft he piloted to promote the Wings Over Gatineau-Ottawa air show. Getting the chance to fly the famed aircraft is just one of the perks awarded to Hansen since he became the new face of the Canadian Space Agency.
