Flights of fancy at Markham Airport: A former Cold War pilot's big plans

Wearing a faded olive-drab flight suit and polished black cowboy boots, Allan Rubin sits in the navigator seat from an Argus anti-submarine patrol bomber. Repurposed with rollers, the reborn office chair is surrounded by a clutter of paperwork and aircraft parts, such as the propeller of a Tiger Moth biplane and a photographic view-finder from a once state-of-the-art U-2 spy plane. Just outside sit four vintage (and mostly functional) fighter jets.

Video: F-35C stealth fighter jet makes first aircraft carrier landing

The F-35C fighter jet made its first aircraft carrier landing recently off the coast of San Diego, aboard the USS Nimitz. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is the most expensive weapons program in American history and has been plagued by technical glitches and budget issues, but the successful landing at sea is being hailed as a major step forward by the Pentagon. The test flight saw the Joint Strike Fighter touch down successfully, with the pilot guiding the plane so its tailhook snagged on the ship's arresting wires, the U.S. Navy said in a statement.

JSF Program Office looks at Canada F-35 swap

A radical fast-track plan to jump-start Canada's stalled effort to buy the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter is revealed in a briefing document obtained by Aviation Week. A recent brief from JSF Program Executive Office director USAF Lt. Gen. Chris Bogdan to Air Force secretary Deborah James calls for Canada to receive four F-35s next year, by diverting them from U.S. Air Force low-rate initial production Lot 7 orders.

RCAF Cormorant helicopter crew receives accolades for difficult rescue

AgustaWestland has congratulated the Royal Canadian Air Force crew of search and rescue helicopter "Rescue 903" for winning this year's Cormorant Trophy. The crew that performed the outstanding rescue on 1st August 2013 and awarded the Cormorant Trophy were the following individuals.

Air Force working on plans to allow women to compete for last 7 male-only jobs in the service

The Air Force's top boss said recently she hopes to make all jobs in the service open to qualified women in the next year and a half. Seven jobs in the service are closed to women, Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James told reporters during a recent visit to Hawaii. James said the Air Force is working on establishing gender-neutral standards for the positions and opening them to whoever is qualified. "That is to say, whatever the standard is, it would be the same for men and women," she said.
