Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo. of the House Armed Services Committee submitted a proposal that calls for the transfer of 100,000 active-duty Army positions into the Army National Guard and Army Reserve to reduce the defense budget by $103 billion over ten years. "I have served in the Army, the Army Reserve, the Marine Corps, and the Marine Corps Reserve and I know from experience that we can retain our capability while reducing cost..."

The Oklahoma Army National Guard is warning the families of military personnel of a hoax involving fake death
notifications in the Oklahoma City area. Lt. Col. Max Moss says the wife of a Navy serviceman was approached by two people wearing camouflage uniforms and claiming to be Army Casualty Notification Officers who told her that her husband had been killed. Moss says the woman was asked to sign paperwork — but refused and called Tinker Air Force Base for help.

The Dept. of Justice sent a proposal to Congress initiating several amendments to current legislation that
would allow the DoJ to enhance their ability to protect the rights of members of the military and their families. Their proposal suggests changes to three statutes, one of which is the Uniformed Service Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, which guards the rights of servicemembers from employment discrimination.

Reservists retrieve space debris from Mongolia

An Air Force Reserve crew from the 729th Airlift Squadron flew to Mongolia to retrieve debris fallen from a rocket launch last year. Though the mission may sound routine, tracking and recovering fallen
space debris happens only a few times per decade, as most fragments from launches or satellites that are lost will usually land in the ocean. The last recoverable debris to come out of orbit landed in remote Antarctica.

Deadline nears to apply for special 'stop loss' pay

Only a month remains for eligible service members, veterans and their beneficiaries to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay. Officials extended a previous deadline to Oct. 21 to allow more time for eligible people to apply. "The nation has rallied behind this effort — the military services have been joined by the White House, Congress, the VA, veteran and military service organizations and friends and family members
around the world," said Lernes Hebert, the Defense Department's director of officer and enlisted personnel management.

In March 2012, the Army plans to launch a five-year troop reduction effort to cut nearly 50,000 soldiers from its ranks using voluntary and involuntary separations and is considering buyouts, reductions in high-year tenure limits and early retirement boards as a means of reducing numbers, Army Service Personnel Chief Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick said, according to an Army Times article.

Improved combat gear to debut in 2012

New hot-weather boots and stronger combat and ACU pants are coming in 2012. Officials also are designing a new combat glove that will better protect the back of the hand. The boots and combat pants will enter the ranks at the beginning of 2012, said Col. William Cole, program manager of Soldier Protection and Individual Protection. The improved Army Combat Uniform pants will roll out in February or March.
