On May 24, 2017, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released its estimate of the revised American Health Care Act (AHCA), which the House narrowly passed on May 4th. Notably, the CBO estimates that 23 million Americans would lose health insurance coverage by 2026. The report also states that about one-sixth of the population resides in areas in which the nongroup market would start to become unstable beginning in 2020 due to states in those areas being more likely to opt for waivers that would eliminate essential health benefit requirements and community-rated premiums. SCAI will continue to provide updates regarding future congressional healthcare reform efforts.

Compared with white men, minority women have significantly higher risk of myocardial infarction or death in the year following percutaneous coronary intervention, according to new research presented at the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions 2017 Scientific Sessions.
Lack of in-depth data on stent-related outcomes of women and minorities represents a diversity gap that has long needed to be addressed, noted Wayne Batchelor, MD, MHS, in a late-breaking clinical trial session.

Electrical isolation of the left atrial appendage during reablation in patients with recurrent atrial fibrillation may confer benefit but is also associated with an increased risk for embolic events, researchers reported at the Heart Rhythm Society Annual Scientific Sessions. "Ectopics from the left atrial appendage (LAA) can act as triggers for AF and electrical isolation of the LAA may improve outcomes in recurrent AF during reablation procedures. Yet, this ablation strategy may be associated with an increased risk of LAA thrombus formation and embolic events," Christian H. Heeger, MD, from the Asklepios Klinik St. Georg in Hamburg, Germany, and colleagues wrote in an abstract.

Numerous randomized trials have attempted to identify which antiplatelet therapy is best to pair with aspirin during PCI for acute coronary syndromes, particularly STEMI, but the question is far from settled in the real world. Two studies presented at EuroPCR 2017, one from the United Kingdom and the other from Sweden, provide insight into what happens outside the research setting.

A novel compliant endovascular balloon may have the potential to save lives in patients who experience superior vena cava tears during transvenous lead extraction, researchers reported at the Heart Rhythm Society Annual Scientific Sessions. Superior vena cava tears during lead extractions are extremely rare, study researcher Roger G. Carrillo, MD, MBA, FHRS, CCDS, from the University of Miami, said during a press conference. Only about 0.46 percent of lead extractions involve superior vena cava tears, but mortality among those who do experience tears is disproportionately high.

Despite new data showing that stem cell therapy has the potential to improve exercise time and reduce mortality in patients with refractory angina, researchers said at the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions 2017 Scientific Sessions that the option is all but dead due to withdrawal of financial support, resulting in patients being denied access to a promising treatment. Presenting a summation of all the data that have been collected over the last decade on the use of autologous CD34+ cells to treat patients with class III or IV angina despite optimal medical therapy, Thomas Povsic, MD, PhD, said this group of patients is in dire need of new treatment options, and maintained that "it is imperative to explore methods to bring this therapy to patients."
