Risk Management Forum

SCAPTA and the North Carolina Chapter of APTA have partnered to provide you with this one-day event that will include presentations covering topics including payment integrity from the prospective of the commercial payer, trends in fraud, waste and abuse initiatives, and minimizing the risk of negative audit outcomes. This forum will be held Oct. 11 at the Mountain Area Health Education Center in Ashville. This forum will provide material relevant to physical therapists, as well as occupational and speech therapists.

    Is South Carolina nullifying Obamacare?

    The claim, from The Huffington Post and others, is that South Carolina is attempting to "nullify" Obamacare. But what the Republican-dominated South Carolina state house passed on May 1 doesn't really nullify anything — not yet, at least. The legislation is more like a resolution, asserting that the state of South Carolina opposes the unconstitutional parts of Obamacare.

    Sequestration does not mandate 2 percent Medicare advantage plan reduction to be forwarded to contracted providers

    Physical therapists and other health care providers that contract with Medicare Advantage plans should check their agreements to make sure their payments aren't erroneously being cut by 2 percent as part of sequestration. CMS clarified in a May 1 memo to Medicare Advantage organizations and others that sequestration does not mandate a 2 percent reduction of reimbursement to Medicare Advantage plan contracted providers.

    Sense of smell may be a vital clue for exercise levels in Parkinson's disease

    Most people with Parkinson's disease are unaware that they are losing their sense of smell. However, according to Dr. Ben Weinstock, a New York physical therapist, a poor sense of smell could signal something much worse: a loss of nerve cells in the heart. Recent studies have shown that the loss of specific brain cells that process odors has a close correlation with the loss of cardiac neurons in Parkinson's disease.
