Lawmakers bash hurdles to renewable-energy projects
USA Today Share
Despite improvements in the past two years, renewable-energy development on public land isn't moving fast enough, lawmakers on the House Natural Resources Committee said. "The Obama administration
claims solar-energy production is one of its highest priorities, yet only a tiny fraction of public land is even being considered for this use, and almost nothing has actually been made available," Republican Rep. Doug Lamborn of Colorado, chairman of the panel's Energy and Minerals Subcommittee, said during a hearing before the full committee. More

New Jersey an unlikely leader in
solar energy
Reuters
Share

New Jersey, home to more industrial waste clean-up sites than any other state, is poised to become an exemplar of solar power usage — though not everyone
is happy about it. Yet the combination of a strict state mandate and a generous carbon offset program has made New Jersey — where only three in eight days are sunny — the second-largest U.S. producer of solar power, after California, where more than half the days are sunny.

San Francisco solar industry fears loss of funding
San Francisco Chronicle
Share

A solar energy and jobs revolution has taken place right in San Francisco. Through a small, carefully designed incentive program called GoSolarSF, the city has created full-time jobs for local youth,
put solar on low-income housing, built clean distributed energy that allows us to shut down dirty peaker plants, and lowered our city's greenhouse gas emissions — and as a result, inspired 20 solar companies to open offices here. But now, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission wants to slash the funding for this good work by 40 percent.

Solar Fest shines light on sun's power
San Antonio Express-News

Despite a cloudy sky for part of the day, the 10th annual Solar Fest went on as planned, highlighting everything from panels that gather sunlight to toilets that handle waste with it. Five bands played on a solar-powered stage, while visitors toured the 90 booths that fill Maverick Park near downtown, peddling all manner of solar-powered or green technology. Kids played in giant hamster balls and adults lined up for free tree
seedlings. The food booths cooked over open fires. And all of it was off the grid.
