Because most cases of postpartum hemorrhage result from uterine atony — the failure of the uterus to contract after delivery of the baby and the placenta — measures to prevent this complication have been recommended for all women who give birth.

One-carbon metabolism, spermatogenesis, and male infertility

Balanced diet is the natural source of micronutrients, such as folate and vitamins, vital for proper functioning of the body. One-carbon metabolic pathway along with folate and other vitamins plays an important role in DNA synthesis and in the establishment of epigenetic modifications like DNA/histone methylation. Spermatogenesis involves distinct cellular, genetic, and chromatin changes during the course of production of male gamete sperm.

Genomic diversity and fitness of E. coli strains recovered from the intestinal and urinary tracts of women with recurrent urinary tract infection

Urinary tract infections are common in women, and recurrence is a major clinical problem. Most UTIs are caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli. UPEC are generally thought to migrate from the gut to the bladder to cause UTI. UPEC form specialized intracellular bacterial communities in the bladder urothelium as part of a pathogenic mechanism to establish a foothold during acute stages of infection. Evolutionarily, such a specific adaptation to the bladder environment would be predicted to result in decreased fitness in other habitats, such as the gut. To examine this prediction, we characterized 45 E. coli strains isolated from the feces and urine of four otherwise healthy women with recurrent UTI.

Spontaneous gene mutations linked to childrens' heart defects

Mutations in genes that occur spontaneously may contribute to congenital heart disease in children, according to a new study. These mutations — which arise after conception, rather than being inherited from a parent — may contribute to about 10 percent of cases of congenital heart disease in children, the study said.

Your menopausal patient's breast biopsy reveals atypical hyperplasia

Your 56-year-old, married, white patient has been on hormone therapy since age 52 for the treatment of vasomotor symptoms. She is taking a low-dose oral estrogen and micronized progesterone combination as she has an intact uterus. Her family history is positive for breast cancer, as her mother was diagnosed at age 68. Her most recent annual screening mammogram shows linear calcifications. Because fine, linear, branching or casting calcifications are worrisome for atypical ductal hyperplasia or ductal carcinoma in situ, a biopsy is recommended.

Intraperitoneal chemo superior in low-volume residual ovarian cancer

Patients with resected advanced ovarian cancer and low-volume residual disease fare better in the long term with intraperitoneal chemotherapy instead of intravenous chemotherapy.

Testicular cancer on rise in US, especially among Hispanic men

The number of testicular cancer cases continues to climb slowly but steadily in the United States, according to new research.

Variations on a gene — and tools to find them

Cancers were once named strictly for the tissue where they originated in the breast, prostate or other part of the body. According to data, 85 percent of the 79 women who completed the survey had used a vaginal cream, 9 percent had used the vaginal ring and 6 percent had used both cream and the ring before switching to the 10 mcg vaginal estradiol tablet (Vagifem, Novo Nordisk).

"While overall quality-of-life measures are highly rated, constipation and bloating appear to negatively affect status, specifically body image," Scott C. Graziano, MD, of Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL, and colleagues concluded in their poster presentation here at the annual clinical meeting of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
