As SGMA continues to focus its efforts on communicating significant industry news to its membership, the In Brief newsletter will be now distributed on a weekly basis. Since In Brief will be seen more frequently, SGMA will reduce the number of stories in each issue so that it remains a newsletter which is a reflection of its title.

Congress Looks to Increase Physical Activity in America SGMA Public Policy Since there has been a dramatic rise in health care spending, Congress is making health care reform a priority. The House of Representatives hopes to pass comprehensive reform legislation by the end of July with the Senate taking up the issue later in the year. SGMA’s goal is to have “The Personal Health Investment Today Act of 2009” (PHIT) included in the broad health care reform package. The PHIT Bill includes tax breaks for sports and fitness equipment purchases. Click Here to send a letter to Congress to show your support.

Attention: Makers of Basketballs, Volleyball, Golf Bags & Tennis Racquets SGMA Public Policy If you want Congress to pursue duty suspension bills that would affect imports of basketballs, volleyballs, golf bags, and tennis racquets, you need to contact one of your two U.S. Senators. The House Ways & Means Committee has now decided to limit its upcoming miscellaneous tariff bill (MTB) only to those duty suspension bills that were introduced and vetted in the last Congress. This means the Senate will be the main channel for SGMA members interested in pursuing duty suspensions that were not introduced in the 110th Congress, including extensions of the existing suspensions on basketballs and volleyballs (scheduled to expire on December 31, 2009), as well as possible new bills on other products such as golf bags and tennis racquets.
