SGMA Research Reveals Consumer Trends

SGMA’s 2009 State of the Industry Report reveals some noteworthy trends: (1) the five ‘hottest’ sports for sales growth in 2009 are fitness walking, lacrosse, running, aerobic training, and camping; (2) the top five categories in 2008 for athletic footwear were running, classics/originals, kids, basketball, and skate/surf; (3) camping’s surge was partly due to families substituting a costly vacation for this outdoor excursion, and (4) older Americans are continuing to buy and use fitness equipment. CPSC Targets Lead Content in Bikes
SGMA Public Policy
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has finalized its decision to delay enforcement of new lead content limits in bicycles and related products under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). The CPSC will formally announce the decision to push back application of the new lead content provision for two years on certain component parts and materials pertaining to bicycles, jogger strollers, and bicycle trailers primarily intended for children 12 years and younger. ATTENTION: Manufacturers of Wood-Related Products
SGMA Public Policy
Right now, the Lacey Act states that sporting goods are exempt from the new reporting requirements on wood and plant content in imported products. That is now being challenged. According to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA), non-governmental organizations and environmental groups are committed to broadening the reporting requirement to include sporting goods.
