The Ebbs and Flows of Participation
Each year, a great deal of time is spent talking about gains and losses of specific sports with respect to participation. Typically, we spend the bulk of our time looking at new people that decide to start playing a sport or want to participate in a specific activity. With that in mind, take time to look at the people that stop playing a sport or activity. Some might call this the ‘leaky bucket’ effect.
SGMA Research Reveals Consumer Trends
SGMA’s 2009 State of the Industry Report reveals some noteworthy trends: (1) the five ‘hottest’ sports for sales growth in 2009 are fitness walking, lacrosse, running, aerobic training, and camping; (2) the top five categories in 2008 for athletic footwear were running, classics/originals, kids, basketball, and skate/surf; (3) camping’s surge was partly due to families substituting a costly vacation for this outdoor excursion, and (4) older Americans are continuing to buy and use fitness equipment. The State of the Industry Report (sponsored by Dow Corning) is available for FREE to SGMA members and associate members.
