SGMA Supports Elimination of Trade Barriers

Upon review of the Doha round of global trade talks, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk believes the U.S. is ready to engage in more substantive negotiations in hopes of concluding the stalled talks by the end of next year. Sources in Geneva have concluded that if the requisite political will is shown, negotiations have the potential to conclude quickly. It remains to be seen whether the political message will transfer into concrete compromises in Geneva. More

Proposed Tariff on Imports Could Violate WTO Rules

Senator Charles Grassley R-Iowa believes a newly proposed climate change bill approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee could violate WTO rules. The provision in question would allow the U.S. to impose a tariff on imports from countries that fail to take measures to curb greenhouse gas emissions. More

Congress Considering New Parameters for Trade Agreements
SGMA Public Policy
Legislation to require extensive review of existing U.S. trade agreements and impose new conditions on future trade negotiations is gaining momentum as Senator Olympia Snowe R-Maine is considering being a co-sponsor of the legislation. The “Trade Reform, Accountability, Development and Employment Act” calls for existing trade agreements that do not meet certain criteria on job losses and access to medicines be negotiated with the U.S. government. New Competition Volleyball Color Options

The NFHS has announced a rule change concerning the approved colors for volleyballs. Schools will have the option to continue to use an all-white volleyball or use a multi-color-paneled volleyball (with a maximum combination of three colors) for the 2010-2011 season. EU Finalizes Welcome Change to Metric-Only Directive
SGMA Education and Resources
The European Union has now completed the formalities for amending the directive that would have required metric-only labeling for all products sold in the EU effective January 1, 2010. As a result, dual labeling (e.g., kilograms and ounces) will be allowed to continue indefinitely, thereby reducing the likelihood of SGMA members being required to prepare separate product labels tailored to European markets.
